Situated in Gotsu, in a historic building, 13 km from Gotsu City General Citizen Center Milky Way Hall, Ryokan Nushiya is a ryokan with an open-air bath and garden. This was our fourth trip to Japan and we've stayed in many ryokans. This is one of our favorites. The space we stayed at was huge. It was a two-story stand alone building. The seats looked out onto the courtyard with a pond and a lot of trees, which was very peaceful. I'm usually not the type to stay in my hotel/ryokan all day, but this place tempted me to do so due to the serenity of the courtyard. There were two private onsen that were easy to access due to the small number of guests that stay here. The food was fabulous. While walking around one morning I found a hiking trail that led up to castle ruins. The next morning I hiked up to the ruins and down the other side and came out near the Moss Land.

Featuring mountain views, Mt Ichibata Cottage in Izumo features accommodation, free bikes, a garden and a terrace. Both WiFi and private parking are accessible at the lodge free of charge. What a surprise this place was! You get to stay on the beautiful temple grounds. The view from the property is great. A great location in between Izumo and Matsue. There's a hiking trail that starts close by that goes all the way to the ocean. There's a sauna right outside the cabin that you can rent for a few hours. One of the employees from the temple will bring you breakfast each morning. We went to the nearby Izumo Enmusubi Onsen (about 15 min drive) and enjoyed the large outdoor onsen. Watching the birds fly over while relaxing in the onsen was so pleasant. It's neither a pro nor a con, but the cabin itself had a very western feel to it. At one point my wife said "I feel like we've stayed in places like this in the US". This was a great deal for the price.

Set 1.7 km from Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum, Onyado Nono Matsue Natural Hot Spring offers 4-star accommodation in Matsue and has a spa and wellness centre. Stayed 2 days at the hotel and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the hotel and the friendliness of the staff. They even had a English speaking staff to assist foreign tourists. I really felt "omotenashi" during my stay here. The facilities were great too and I'm so happy that they had free washing machine. You just needed to pay another 100 yen to dry your clothes for 20 mins. It was great that you could enjoy the onsen, wait for your laundry to finish, then enjoy the free ice-cream or probiotic drink after the onsen. Had breakfast during the New Year period and the food was great. There was a change in the menu on day 2, so I was impressed.
