FAQs about hotels in Canberra

Culture, Politics and Military Mix

A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.

Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.

The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.

The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.

Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

I really only had 2 days there and packed in the NGA, portrait gallery, museum of Australian democracy at Old Parliament House, War memorial and Mount Ainslie. Also walked across the lake for Wednesday lunchtime bell ringing of Carillon. Everything is very spread out and I did a lot of walking! When visiting museums and galleries etc there is no other option but to pay over $17 for a day's parking. Little choice of where to eat and drink. Overpriced lunch at NGA cafeteria, then discovered that the one at portrait gallery was more reasonable. I also regretted forgetting to bring fruit and biscuits with me for additional sustenance - I must have walked 4-5 km that day! Mount Ainslie easily accessible by car to the top and then it's a geriatric stroll around - a must do to get a sense of the Burley-Griffins' Canberra.

I keep coming back every year, in fact, this is / was my second visit this year 2025. I particularly like the more relaxed state that I feel in Canberra visiting it's attractions, and there are many.

Canberra is fascinating as it's a very contemporary and growing satellite city, yet it's in a rural setting and maintains a bucolic feel. There are some great eateries and bars and the feel of Canberra well suits young professionals.

Canberra is a great city for a long weekend. We visited the Art Gallery (Cezanne to Giacometti), the National Library (Livin' in the 70's), The Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of Australia. All were excellent. We ate a diverse range of foods, Ethiopian on Northbourne, Wilma's, Bicicletta, Maple & Clove. All were very good. Canberra is a special place to visit.

Free entry into the places we visited and some places also free parking. Lots to do and see and lovely walks. Loved the war memorial and afternoon Last post service. Had a fabulous guided tour and the guide was very knowledgeable. Had our own car and very easy to navigate around. Not much traffic in the inner city (which is where we stayed). Went to a fabulous Irish Pub and they had an (Irish music) jam session which was great (Tuesday night)

Canberra is a lovely place... when the weather works in your favour. Transport is super easy, bus stops everywhere and the roads are pretty good too! Roadworks, merge lanes and weird roundabouts (of where there are PLENTY) keep things reasonably interesting if you're driving, but it's not necessarily difficult to commute around. I would recommend NOT driving to the CBD. Parking SUCKS. Can HIGHLY recommend the War Memorial, and all the views in and around Telstra Tower. Black Mountain Peninsula is beautiful. Park there is awesome.

Quest City Walk is located at the heart of Civic and it is easily accessible via bus and light rail. From there, you can visit many landmarks around Canberra by foot or by public transport. The hotel is clean and has all the essential amenities which you need. The only downside is that room service is not available on weekends. The hotel also provides free laundry service, very handy for guests on a long stay.

Excellent location to visit family in Canberra who lived next door. Checked in late, staff were very helpful. It is a great little hotel with nice clean and comfortable rooms for a very good price. Little convenience shop in the foyer is great for milk or wine or cheese and crackers. I would stay again.

Very nice hotel at a good price on this occasion. Just a 1 night visit, we didn't eat the hotel but the veggie menus looked great! Usually this hotel is booked out when we are in Canberra.
