FAQs about hotels in Canberra

Culture, Politics and Military Mix

A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.

Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.

The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.

The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.

Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

There is always plenty to do and not enough time.

There is always plenty to do and not enough time. The National Library has regular displays and a good cafe. Currently a 1975 exhibit is worthwhile for a visit. The Botanical Gardens are very special and offer nice walking as does the Arboretum. Both have cafes. ON Sundays parking seems to be free at many galleries the Library and other significant places. Old Parliament House, now the Museum of Democracy is a favourite place of ours. School age children especially love Questacon which is a wonderful asset for them to visit.

Loved Floriade flower festival first week of trip.

Loved Floriade flower festival first week of trip. Absolutely beautiful. Great activities also, music and food stalls. Highly recommend Canberra in Spring with all the beautiful blossoms around the lake. Also loved the Tulip Farm. Sad Telstra Tower was closed due to renno's as was married there in the year 2000. Went to the War Memorial, Mint, Parliament House, Art Gallery, Museum, Questacon and climbed Mt Ainslie which was a decent hike up n back with great views. Watched the sunrise from Red Hill. Wish we'd done the ballooning!

    What a vibrant city.

What a vibrant city. Lots of commerce, shops and restaurants/cafes. The food was amazing with a vast selection of cuisines. A good selection of hustle bustle in the main shopping areas, along with slower paced ambles through fringe shops and parks. Plenty of parking areas with the Convention Centre being 24/7 and well priced. 5 days would allow the time to see all the city sights, then add a few more to see places like Parliament House, War Memorial, Botanical Gardens, etc.

I really only had 2 days there and packed in the NGA, portrait gallery, museum of Australian democracy at Old Parliament House, War memorial and Mount Ainslie. Also walked across the lake for Wednesday lunchtime bell ringing of Carillon. Everything is very spread out and I did a lot of walking! When visiting museums and galleries etc there is no other option but to pay over $17 for a day's parking. Little choice of where to eat and drink. Overpriced lunch at NGA cafeteria, then discovered that the one at portrait gallery was more reasonable. I also regretted forgetting to bring fruit and biscuits with me for additional sustenance - I must have walked 4-5 km that day! Mount Ainslie easily accessible by car to the top and then it's a geriatric stroll around - a must do to get a sense of the Burley-Griffins' Canberra.

Canberra is fascinating as it's a very contemporary and growing satellite city, yet it's in a rural setting and maintains a bucolic feel. There are some great eateries and bars and the feel of Canberra well suits young professionals.

Canberra is a great city for a long weekend. We visited the Art Gallery (Cezanne to Giacometti), the National Library (Livin' in the 70's), The Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of Australia. All were excellent. We ate a diverse range of foods, Ethiopian on Northbourne, Wilma's, Bicicletta, Maple & Clove. All were very good. Canberra is a special place to visit.

The Ramada Diplomat staff were really accommodating and allowed an early check in which I really appreciated. My room was spacious, clean, comfortable and warm. Reception provided accurate walking directions for me to grab lunch in the day, and dinner and breakfast at the hotel restaurant was excellent. They also provided the invoice as requested for this work trip. Highly recommend to all visitors to Canberra, the location is also very convenient if travelling by train. Thank you Ramada Diplomat team.

Plenty of carparking. Checkin was easy and all staff were lovely and friendly.. Most comfortable hotel beds I've ever slept in. Easily accessible, lovely and quiet, and not far out of the Canberra city area. The rooms are cosy, not big or anything spectacular, but as the name states, it's budget accommodation. Perfect to stay when you're out most of the day and only need somewhere to sleep and get ready. This will remain my place to stay when visiting Canberra for short breaks.
