FAQs about hotels in Shanghai

A Beacon of Modern China

A beacon of 21st-century China, Shanghai is modernising at an electrifying rate. Nowhere is this more evident than the skyscraper-punctuated Pudong commercial district. The most distinct - the Oriental Pearl Tower - has a ball at the top and bottom and offers fabulous city views. A number of towers also twist as they go up – a feat of contemporary engineering.

This side of the city also houses Shanghai Pudong International Airport, while Shanghai Hongqiao Airport is over the Huangpu River in the Puxi district. An area of older and less dominating buildings, Puxi features the elegant Bund area whose varied architecture includes a surprising array of Art Deco.

With a choice of shopping centres and small shops beneath brightly lit neon signs just like Chinatowns across the world, Shanghai shopping is fantastic.

Other must-see Shanghai attractions include the wonderful Shanghai Museum and the Jade Buddha Temple. For a break from the hustle and bustle head to the Yuyuan Gardens, the beach or peaceful Zhujiajiao Water Town in the west.

Whether you choose one of the Shanghai hotels, apartments or hostels, take time to go to a tea house, a Chinese institution. Also worth sampling are Shanghai hairy crab, steamed dumplings and the freshwater fish so popular with locals.

Lawless, filthy place. Sewage stinks, entire streets stink.

Lawless, filthy place. Sewage stinks, entire streets stink. Human spit and urine are glistening in the sun on the streets of this dirty and hostile city. Hawking and spitting is so disgusting, but here it is a national sport happening all the time everywhere. Urinating on the street as well. Driving morotcicles on sidewalks and parks and ploughing through pedestrians is a lawless norm which will ruin every step you make here. You will simply not be able to stroll the streets. You can get killed.

Shanghai is a fabulous city-there's really a huge number of attractions in the city and surrounding area. people are friendly and helpful-although if your Mandarin is weak(mine's basically non-existent) you'e have to communicate with sign language or rely on your counterpart using the excellent Chinese translation app. Don't let this deter you! The city is surprisingly easy to get around. Cabs are quick, plentiful, and cheap-we used them almost exclusively. The road system is excellent, allowing trips to major inner-city to be qu

This was not my 1st visit to Shanghai, so I skipped the usual tourist sights, such as Yu Garden. Focus on art and culture instead. Visited Shanghai m50 Creative Park, which used to be abandoned textile factories. Throughly enjoyed popping into the various art studios and galleries, checking out the works of local artists. The walk around the French Concession area, particularly Wukang Road was very enjoyable, not to mention Tianzifang with their interesting legacy architecture. A bonus during this trip was an unplanned visit to Shanghai Natural History Museum, when visiting the Jing'An Sculpture Park. What lured me there was an ongoing Dinosaur World Exhibition, touted to have the largest collection of dinoraur fossil and skeletons. The exhibition cost an additional RMB 88 but was totally worth it. Even if not visiting the exhibition, the main exhibit in the museum is impressive on its own, comprising 5 floors of exhibits, showing the evolution of human and all living things on earth. Only grouse is that the Bund and the Nanjing Pedestrian Street is still just as crowded..

This hotel is part of the domestic terminal at Shanghai Hongqiao airport. Very grand entrance from within the terminal on the departures level. Breakfast choice was very good and well worth the extra money. Excellent views of the airport action and looking out over the ramps and runways, if you get a high enough view. Asked for and was given a later check-out time of 2pm at no extra cost. Handy coach service between Pudong and Hongqiao airports too.

Marriott City Center, Shanghai – 10/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Amazing stay! The staff was exceptionally helpful – especially grace song quickly solved a small issue with our original room and upgraded us to a top-level room. The hotel is spotless, perfectly suited for international travelers, and the team went above and beyond to assist us with our plans in Shanghai. Breakfast was rich and varied, with plenty of options for Western tastes. Highly recommended!
