It's a small city with a nice beachwalk (malecon) The part closer to the beach is more nice. A typical Colombian city, nice to see & explore it, but nothing to return to. The town itself isn't particularly interesting, although it does have some nice options for seafood and urban beach type activities. The main point of it seems to be as a base of operations for either day trips to places of interest in the surrounding area or longer trips into the desert peninsula of La Guajira. Riohacha feels more like a stop gap for those headed up to Cabo de la Vela. Its a small town with lots of conveniences, like an airport, a lot of hotels, bus terminal, lots of convenience stores, groceries, pharmacies and banks. The beach is OK, not amazing. it might be possible to swim sometimes but the water doesn't look clear and clean. The people are generally friendly but you must be able to speak some Spanish -as much as the rest of Latin America.. It's a good place to get your bearings and rest or catch up on a little work if you find a place with good wifi.
