This is Mecca for Wagner fans in July and August. The acoustics of the Festspielhaus are superb and unique--no other place achieves that blend of voice and orchestra. We went there for the opera experience, which is indeed spectacular if you like Wagner. The city is rather ugly in my opinion, and highly car oriented. Outside of the old town, the city is dominated by wide roads driven at high speed. The old town itself is fairly unpleasant as well, though there are some nice culinary experiences to be had. I stayed in Bayreuth six times before It is a charming city, but of course the major reason for going is the Wagner festival. It is well provided for in terms of restaurants and bars. I could walk to the theater and back by foot, which makes life definitely easier. It was quite spacious for us to sleep in 2 different places: one parent would put the child to sleep and the other would come late after the performance. I would only recommend to ask the guests if they prefer to have 1 beer and 1 without alcohol or just 2 beers instead on the complimentary mini bar. Our balcony was spacy, the chairs big and comfortable, plus the sauna was top! The staff were great and even kept our frozen provisions in the hotel freezer for us. Very comfortable and only 10 minutes walk from the pedestrian precinct and old town.
