Braunschweig gets overlooked, but the art gallery is the second largest in Europe after the Louvre. Would make a great stopover on the way to Berlin (direct motorway). Very reasonable and not overcrowded. Excursions to the VW works in Wolfsburg next door, or Wolfenbuettel (Lessinghaus, castle and library). The old inner German border crossing of Helmstedt Marienborn (monastery) would be another day trip, or the slightly further Harz mountains. Wonderful city full of history and some lovely buildings. Good public transport and friendly people The Schloss was good for retail outlets and cafes The information office was difficult to find but once there it was found, it had all the information you wanted and the staff spoke good English if your German was not good.
