Germany’s oldest city and capital of the Western Roman Empire until the 3rd century, Trier is overflowing with exquisite architecture and Roman ruins such as the Amphitheatre and Porta Nigra gate. The colossal Cathedral Trier is also the oldest of its kind in Germany.
Historic landmarks continue with the 2nd-century Roman bridge that crosses over the Moselle river, which also passes through nearby Luxembourg and France. Cruises along the Moselle start in Koblenz and end in Trier.
Trier was the home of Karl Marx and the 15th-century University of Trier is home to a large student population that often refers to the university as Karl-Marx-University of Trier. His birthplace is now a museum, Karl Marx House.

Lovely city, lots of sights to see. After 3 visits we still haven't seen everything. Lots of places to have a drink in the afternoon and early evening, but bar and terraces do seem to close early. The best is its great location, especially in those rooms that have a total view of the Porta Nigra. It is close to the most enchanting places of Trier. The worst: a) the night staff is terrific, b) there is no designated space to leave your luggage for a few hours; they left it just behind the front desk. c) The bedclothes are not the standard in Mexico and the USA. It only includes a coat that does not completely protect you; it is too heavy in hot weather, and I suppose that having conditioned air in wintertime could be enough. I walked around Trier and saw many things. One of my favorites was the cathedral and the adjoining basilica. I also was amazed at the Porta Nigra and Constantine’s basilica. The Hauptmarkt was a lot of fun to explore and enjoy the cafés. I had a great meal at one of the restaurants in the hauptmarkt, excellent German food and a great selection of beer. The main problem for us was the fact that parking is difficult and extremely expensive. When having bikes withe you , its difficult to find no pay parking away from the centre. On restauarants , quite a few serve acceptable simple menues, but price wise they often go over the top. Even simple lunch facilities in shopping centres are over the top with pricing ans we have seen visitors after seeing the menue walking out and you can guess why. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the hotel offers a good breakfast. The staff are also extremely pleasant and helpful and in our case they needed to be. We had booked for one night, but due to a motorcycle breakdown we were stuck in Trier for over three weeks and they managed to provide accommodation, extended almost on a daily basis, for the full time. We did a lot of walking, 19000 steps to be exact per day, so one can imagine we saw a lot in our travels and experiences were wonderful. There are a few nice restaurants on a walk reach with a river view and the overall accommodation atmosphere is relaxing, chill down and enjoy. My single room was adequate, well furnished with an interesting shower arrangement. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful and the restaurant food is excellent but it is busy so book a table early. It’s about 25 minutes walking to Trier itself.
