What did I like? Where do I start? I liked...no, I loved every minute of my stay at Maqai. It is as close to paradise as I'll allow my pragmatic mind to entertain. From the relative remoteness to the natural beauty, the super-relaxed atmosphere to the genuine warmth of the staff, this is a very special place. More of a traveller vibe than that of the well-worn tourist path of the islands closer to Nadi. Slightly rustic? Sure, but only in the best possible way. Cathy (manager) ran as tight a ship as possible on a tropical island in the Pacific. She was welcoming and prompt with her email replies to my questions regarding all the various water sports and cultural experiences on the island. In no particular order, the following staff members quickly began to feel like old friends...Navo, Etta, Sala, Emosi, Soni, Tui, Junior, Jale, Johnny, Mama's Soke & Luce, Netta and Suki (four legged and furry). They all exude such an authentically friendly yet service oriented approach to their individual roles. I can't speak highly enough of how they looked after me. It is up to you how much or how little activity you schedule into your day on Qamea. Highlights included surf trips to the outer reefs, snorkelling and lunch on the Island Tour, the Sunday morning village visits and church service, and the food. Crikey, the food. I had to ask for slightly less portions by dinner time, or I would have no room left for evening kava with the locals! If you're reading this review and considering/comparing it with other options in Fiji, fair enough, but I honestly feel it is a rare and rich experience worth every cent and the added travel time to get there. From the moment we arrived, we felt incredibly welcomed by the owners. They were so kind and friendly, making us feel right at home. The homestay itself was charming, spacious and comfortable, and the food provided was absolutely delicious – every meal was so yummy and filling! We loved our stay with this gorgeous family. Super comfortable bed, space to ourselves if we wanted it and fantastic company also. Breakfast was wonderful. Really can’t say enough as to the value in so many ways of staying here. Sarah cooked us dinner one night also and it was one of the best meals we have had in Fiji and very generous of course. If you need transport Sam was a great driver and we loved being shown around by him. Just fabulous!!!

If you think about Homestay experience, this is the perfect place ! Sarah and Sam are absolutely amazing! More than helpful, really kind and mindful! Thank you for your kindness and knowledge! Home is close to the airport and a bus stop. Sarah and Sam have really good tips on how to visit the island and will adapt to your way of traveling:) The food is absolutely great, and I garanty, you won't leave the table hungry ;) The room was clean and tidy, with everything you need, even a newly added AC ! Oceanfront location with proximity to other services if needed (grocery store, airport, other resort restaurants). Small number of guest cottages/guests on site. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We appreciated all of the information provided before we arrived to insure a comfortable and pleasant experience. Excellent snorkeling within a short boat ride from the property.

The view, food, and staff hospitality were all amazing. The nights were exceptionally quiet, and snorkeling directly from the local beach allowed us to explore the ocean’s wildlife. Trips to the jungle with waterfalls were spectacular. Food is exceptional as well!

The snorkelling out the back of the hotel was lovely. There was a large staff to customer ratio which meant there was always someone to help you. Lots of lovely plants at the hotel and the rooms were nice. Free water refills is always appreciated.

Aroha was a stunning setting. Thanks for having us! The bedrooms were lovely and clean. The food from the restaurant was delicious. Our hosts and the staff were really friendly and attentive. One of the best places we’ve stayed on our trip!
