Rich History and Medieval Beauty
Bayeux is a medieval French town in the region of Lower Normandy, known for the 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry which depicts scenes from the conquest of England by William the Conquerer in 1066. Registered by UNESCO as ‘Memory of the World’, this historic tapestry is 70 metres long and gives us information about the way of life in the Middle Ages.
The Norman-Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral has impressive stained glass windows, bas-relief sculptures and a crypt with 15th-century frescoes beneath its floor. Consecrated in 1077, this structure is the place where the Bayeux Tapestry was kept for about seven centuries.
Opened in 1864, the botanical garden of Bayeux, which is home to the popular Weeping Beech tree and about 400 more trees, is open daily for free. You can wander around the picturesque old part of the city or visit the vibrant city centre with the modern shops and restaurants.

Bayeux is a 35 min taxi ride from the ferry in Ouistraham (which is Caen on their schedule). There are busses to nearby sites (Arromanches), but usually once per day is your option. You spend a lot more time relying on the bus, but taxis are very expensive and not plentiful. I loved the town of Bayeux itself-very quaint, and walkable. I found the Tourist Information center to be extremely helpful and they speak great English. A charming small town, brimming with history and interest. A good base for days out and excellent restaurants for dinner - but be sure to book ahead in August as very busy. Bayeux itself was amazing.
Bayeux itself was amazing. Got to the see the Festival of Lights at the Cathedral and visited the Bayeux Tapestry. The whole town is quaint, lively and walkable. Further afield is Mont St Michel which is absolutely incredible and definitely worth a visit. I took advantage of the museums and cathedral in Bayeux...
I took advantage of the museums and cathedral in Bayeux itself, but also it was a convenient point for tours of the D-Day beaches and Mont St. Michel. I also spent one afternoon in Caen. Probably best to get there by car as the town is served by trains, but no buses were in evidence. I traveled in late August and but for the closing of the Tapestry Museum in September, I probably would have enjoyed the town and site-seeing with fewer crowds outside of peak holiday season. The light show on the side of the cathedral was a summer-only bonus that I very much enjoyed and would have missed if I traveled outside of July or August.Guest review byReneeUnited Kingdom
