Amazing place to base yourself for time in the Pyrenees.
Amazing place to base yourself for time in the Pyrenees. We stayed for a week and could have stayed a few more days. Tons of hikes, waterfalls, water activities, and climbing within an hour's drive (but many places are much closer than that). My one piece of advice would be to make dinner reservations ahead of time or order your takeout early because most places fill up really fast and even the pizza places stopped taking orders early in the evening because they filled up so quickly! Cauterets is lovely town in the middle of the Pyrenees with amazing views of the mountains. A good base if you like hiking or cycling. It has a market with lots of yummy food, bakeries, restaurants and other shops. I was in Cauterets to do some walks.
I was in Cauterets to do some walks. In the four days I was there in June 2025 there were two days of low cloud which restricted the type of walk that could be done, but also two clear, sunny days which allowed more choice. The climate in the area means that there is no certainty about the type of weather you may get. It is a pleasant village with a good selection of restaurants and good bus connectivity. We visited in mid summer as a base for walking in the mountains. It was hot and busy, but not so busy that it felt crowded or unpleasant. The nice thing about Cauterets is that one feels very much in the mountains, and indeed there are pleasant walks to do into the mountains directly from the town. We had a beautiful room with a fab bathroom including a bath-tub for a soak after a mountain hike. Perfect. We opted for the shared evening meal sitting round a long table with other guests from France, Holland, USA, getting to know each other, sharing stories of places to visit, and enjoying the good food provided by our host. It's spacious with 2 bedrooms with a double bed , 1 bedroom with double bunk beds and a sofabed in the living area. All have large windows. We were 4 adults and used all the 3 bedrooms.
