A Labyrinth of History and Architecture
Chartres is a French medieval town in the Eure-et-Loir department, about 90 km from Paris. Home to historic 16th-century buildings, half-timber houses, narrow streets and large squares, this well preserved city will amaze you with its beauty.
The 13th-century Cathedral of Chartres is the city’s main landmark and a famous site of Christian pilgrimage. Featuring 18th-century stained-glass windows and a stunning façade with bas-relief sculptures and stone statues, this UNESCO World Heritage is one of the most important Gothic cathedrals in France.
On the back side of the Cathedral, travellers will find a Grass Labyrinth, date back to around 1200. According to the tradition, pilgrims used to go to the centre of the labyrinth in order to receive the grace of God.
The Massacre Bridge is one of the bridges crossing the Eure River, which flows right to the heart of the old part of the city. Chartres has also beautiful churches like the St. Aignan and the St. Martin-au-Val.

The Son et Lumiere display on the Cathedral and other locations around the town centre are always amazing. Such a beautiful place, especially the cathedral which is a must see inside and out. The shopping area is a delight with little streets going in all directions to find lots of smaller shops, especially the thrift stores. The restaurants are very nice and reasonably priced for the quality of the food and I highly recommend the Cafe Blue right next to the cathedral. A perfect place for great food in a great location. The late evening illuminations is an absolute must see, even if it doesn't start until dark. Get there early and book the little Dotto type train, which will take a leisurely drive around the best locations and buildings which participate in the illuminations. It takes about 45 minutes for less than €10. A great place to visit or better still, stay for a week or even a weekend. I will definitely be back!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

The ambiance of the old part of Chartres is lovely ...beautiful buildings, good restaurants and pedestrianised. The cathedral is outstanding, and the tresor well worth visiting. We took the little train near the cathedral at night to view many of the 20 son et lumiere sites. The 'Chartres 1000 ans 360 degree spectacle' is well worth a visit.Guest review byCarolFrance - 10.0

The town is lovely, the Cathedral beautiful. We will have to return to see inside as there was a service in progress that afternoon, however the illuminations were excellent, well worth waiting for. A proper French town, interesting buildings, and of course, many cafes and restaurants, quirky and touristy shops. Chartres was amazing!!
Chartres was amazing!! Especially since we had an apartment right on Place Billard. We loved the whole old centre ville. The cathedral is absolutely beautiful and amazing.
