Our visit was a Saturday in August, the main streets were decorated with balloons and umbrellas, the pavements were full of restaurants/cafes tables and chairs, very festive. A bonus was the use of old fashioned wooden games with instructions, unfortunately only in French. The town has history dating back thousands of years and is documented from the time of the Romans; the character of the town is enhanced from its elevated position, with the walled perimeter, dense buildings, and cathedral, standing tall in otherwise flat countryside. There's a real sense of arrival as you climb up to your final destination. We've visited three times, twice in winter as a long drive stopover, and once in the summer. The cobbled streets, old buildings, cafes, shops, bars, restaurants, and sites are varied and interesting. It's a place that's full of character and well worth a visit for a day or two, maybe longer. We particularly like staying in the Hôtel de la Bannière de France in the heart of the old centre, assuming we have some time to appreciate the visit. I more or less put a pin in a map to find a place to stay on the way to the Alps from Calais. Laon was a very pleasant surprise, with lots of interesting buildings including the exceptional cathedral. Laon was such a pleasant surprise. The Office of Tourism has a free downloadable app that really worked well; it described the Cathedral with detail that we would never have found on our own as well as offering several loops around the city. We also were impressed with the vast history of this town. It obviously was an important community in the 12th and 13th century. Pretty historic town with lovely buildings, beautiful cathedral and lots to explore. Range of cafes and restaurants but seem to close early. Car parking in the centre is limited to one and a half hours and you need to purchase a blue disk from the tabac or tourist office next to the cathedral parking outside the town walls is free and, consequently, tricky to find a space. A calm street and a small but lovely garden for the afternoon coffée. Isabelle, her man Michaël and their sweet daughter were very welcoming, and it felt like we were their personal guests. The three rooms were all very lovely and personally decorated. We slept very well in the comfortable beds, and the breakfast was generous and good. So it’s convenient for those who visit Laon in transit. Clean, comfortable, quiet. Walking to the historical center would be tiresome but busses are available (although not frequent service) as well as taxis.
