A French and Flemish Chocolate Box
A few miles from the Belgian border, Lille displays Flemish influence in both architecture and cuisine. Its most famous square - Grand Place - is home to the beautiful Vielle Borse building, the Lille Christmas markets and several restaurants serving moules-frites and local beer.
Behind that is the Palais Rihour, a rather odd-looking building surrounded by cafes. In the opposite direction is another square with the opera house at the centre and triangular-shaped buildings fanning off in 3 directions. One of these cobbled streets leads to the Old Town, where boutiques and international brands are in beautifully crafted shops.
Shopping in Lille is actually epic. It has Europe’s largest bookstore (the 8-floor Furet du Nord) and largest flea market - the Braderie de Lille. Then there is the bustling Wazemmes market and the huge Euralille shopping centre. The town also has some fantastic chocolate shops.
Other attractions include the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Citadelle – a 17th-century fortress surrounded by a free zoo and gardens.
Lesquin Airport is on the city’s outskirts, but most visitors arrive at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, named after Lille’s most famous son. If travelling to Lille by Eurostar, check out the mural of famous European landmarks before heading to your Booking.com hotel, B&B or apartment.

It was raining for a couple of the three days I was there but even so there are things to do inside. In the sun the park is big and I spent a lot of time there on the first day and it's really easy to walk around Lille I did the City Tour by coach provided by the tourist office and although I had walked a lot of the route it does give you a different view of Lille. The Palais des Beaux-Arts is a wonderful building housing paintings and sculptures. If you like art you can spend quite a few hours here and it has a cafe. The city has some very nice architecture. We felt like it wasn't very family orientated and noticed that there were few other families with small children in the tourist strip. We ended up in a tourist trap for dinner. Had the impression that the traditional food options weren't authentic. Felt safe. Metro is 5 mins walk to get to Lille old town. The room is clean and shower is powerful. Wifi signal is very strong and efficient. There is a mini kitchenette to use with necessary items but we did not use it. Throughly recommend this place and will go back again if we go back to Lille.
