Saumur is a gem of a town, there are so many activities that you can participate in, whether cycling, kayaking, walking around the historic town or going for the famous degustation at one of the numerous vineyards that are within easy distance. It is also the gateway to dozens of chateau. There are cruises on the river to suit most budgets and restaurants from the basic to the expensive. There are also various markets and festivities that take place. If you have time the Petits Train is a must, forty minutes being driven around the historic town gives you a new perspective on life, especially the view from the right bank which lets you enjoy the historic panorama on the left bank.Guest review byPaulUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Lovely relaxed atmosphere with some great restaurants. The Chateau was interesting but I've visited better. The Cavalry museum was informative and only 6 euros for entry. A walkable city, very compact.
A walkable city, very compact. Good buses to places of interest and to visit the other side of Saumur over the river. Lots to do for everyone, Cadre Noir horse show, an armoured vehicle museum which is very interesting. Vineyard trips. Sadly not as pretty or enjoyable as our previous visit some years ago. Pretty grubby street wise, could do with a good clean and some flowers might improve it's appearance. We were only there for a two day visit. It lies sheltered underneath Saumur Castle. The courtyard is a lovely area to relax in. Breakfast was very fresh with fresh fruit and yogurt in addition to juice fresh country bread and delicious croissants. Soya milk was bought especially for my husband . Overall, a great place to stay for our 4 nights in Saumur. We had a family room for the two of us, a very quiet room overlooking the pretty courtyard / parking area. We'll stay again, having stayed in Saumur 8 or 9 times in previous years the Hotel Anne Anjou is amongst the top places to stay.
