We arrived quite late at 7:30pm. The staff member on reception was very friendly and accommodating and advised that we had been upgraded to the newly renovated rooms as they had availability. The rooms were exceptionally clean, comfortable and well provisioned. I have been lucky enough to stay in a couple of fancy hotels, including Hayman Island on the Great Barrier Reef, and the rooms we had at Marks Tey were on a par and better than those hotel rooms. Excellent value for money for our last-minute booking. Menu looked tasty and great value, but we had already eaten so didn't try the food on this occasion.

I loved the hotel and would definitely stay there again when visiting Colchester! Very good value for money. The room was huge, with a double bed and a sofa. The bathroom was nice as well, the shower room was huge and it had shampoo, shower gel and soap for the hands. The room was very clean and had a kettle and everything to have a tea in the room. The staff was very friendly! You can ask for a comb, toothbrush or shaving kit for free in the reception. I had dinner in the restaurant, tried different food and it was delicious and very tasty, also affordable.

We only stayed overnight in Colchester and left round lunchtime, so didnt have much time to browse, but we went to a few places and walked round the park! We will come back again and visit the castle. The area around there looks beautiful, too!

Colchester is a beautiful town with lots of historic beauty. We only had two nights here, but would definitely visit again for longer. The centre is great for shopping, with many pedestrianised streets, and a mix of well-known shops, street vendors and local independent businesses. It's really not that large, so it's easy to walk around. Our favourite locations were the Firstsite art gallery and cafe, the Curzon cinema (next door), the Minories art gallery and the castle park. We also easily found some great restaurants. There seemed to be loads of Italian restaurants, but we preferred the Vietnamese and Japanese places. Our favourite shops were Red Lion Books on the High Street and Bestdays Vintage on Eld Lane, for great coffee, vintage clothes and music chat with the staff.

Colchester is great for a short weekend trip; it's not a large city, so everything is close by and it's easy to explore Colchester on foot. There are a range of different restaurants and pubs, to suit all needs. Add in places of historical interest such as the castle, and nature such as High Woods Country Park, and there's enough variety to keep busy for a few days. A historical tour is worth doing and the city has a nice relaxed atmosphere to it overall.

We really enjoyed the Colchester Castle and tour, as well as the historical sites around town , such as the water tower and Balkan Gate. The park was lovely and the Dutch quarter was interesting to see. Nearby, we had a great visit to Frinton where the beach is lovely. Also we travel.ed to Flatford Mill and had a smashing boat trip. It was easy to walk around the town. We ate at Wetherspoons ( The Playhouse) which was a novel venue and Wei's kitchen where the food and the host were great.

Great shopping centre, great for history, locals not really friendly, I travel alot and first time I've ever seen unfriendly locals...it was very strange. We stayed at Grorge Hotel to park at the back of hotel, it tells you at traffic lights you cars can't turn right, hotel said you could, we were worried in case we got a fine, this needs to be clearer, disappointed the museum was closed

Colchester doesn't really have a lot going for it.

Colchester doesn't really have a lot going for it. The castle is really worth a visit. There weren't the Roman remains that my husband was hoping for as a lot has been built on. It's very much a working town. But maybe we didn't do enough research to get the best out of it. Bus service is good and saves trying to drive and park through the town.

The hotel's location is great for a city break to Colchester to explore the historic town. The area has some good restaurants, independent cafes and retail therapy e.g. Fenwick upmarket department store. The hotel staff were professional and very helpful, being able to provide local knowledge, and practicalities like closing a stuck bedroom window. The continental breakfast was good with a fair amount of choice. Free and secure on-site parking was a big plus too, with the solid entrance gates being shut from 9pm nightly.

I last stayed at the hotel approx., 15 years ago and the room had changed little over that time. There was also a lot of building works going on. Looked like an extension, possibly to the dining room. I guess that was the reason why the dining room was closed. Instead, you could eat in the bar area where there were (possibly) 10 small tables with 1 to 2 covers. Lacked ambiance and the menu was obviously limited but my meal was OK. Wanted a cheap stay whilst travelling so this fitted the bill.

A beautiful, comfortable and quiet hotel in a fantastic location. Tried the food this time and it was incredible. Reasonably priced for Room Service. The Junior Suites are incredible with a huge bathroom covered in marble down a small flight of stairs. I have already booked again for future. This is now my go-to hotel for Colchester.

The location was the real selling point and the rates were reasonable. There was parking behind the George Hotel at £9.50 for 24hrs which was a good rate. The place was clean and comfortable. If you're looking for a base camp to come back to and you want to be in Central Colchester it's great.
