The quaint city of Ely in the county of Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom is far enough off the beaten path and such a lovely place worth visiting that I highly recommend a visit. If you are like me and look for remarkable sites with a lot of local culture while avoiding major crowds, then Ely is your place. Here are my main reasons why you should consider a 2-3 day visit to Ely as part of your UK holiday. 1. Ely Cathedral -- be sure to book a tour in advance. I highly recommend taking the Octagon tour also -- a world architectural marvel! 2. Ely Museum, Stained Glass Museum, Oliver Cromwell's house, waterfront, and walking paths. 3. Local culture. We found a laid back and inviting community. We engaged in numerous conversations with so many people over the weekend. It was welcoming and relaxing. Ely is a small city with a big cathedral. The cathedral is impressive both inside and out. Other attractions are Oliver Cromwell's house, a museum, riverside with marina and lively Saturday market. A lot to see in a compact, walkable area. The Cathedral is very impressive, with great, guided tours and I attended several services. City Museum and Cromwell Museum are each worth a visit. Always loved Ely having trained at the RAF Hospital in 1965, met and married my late husband and made wonderful forever friends. The little city has a long history, delightful old buildings and a magnificent Cathedral and is surrounded by pretty villages, its own railway station and interesting Fenland. The staff was without exceptiob friendly and helpful, the room was small but very well appointed. It's a lovely old building but despite the age has excellent ammenities. Good showe, sufficient outlets, good air-conditioning, and very good sound-proofing. I could occasionally hear noises from the street but never heard anything from the crowded pub the floor below. Almost everything you might need is provided. Milk and water in fridge, and snacks provided on arrival was nice touch. Friendly family, most welcoming. Very easy drive into Ely, even in rush hour.
