Had an excellent time at The Old Forge and Julie was absolutely lovely. The garden is beautiful, as is the building. Breakfast was good, too, though I only had a light one once.

The breakfast was excellent, and we especially enjoyed chatting to the staff. The old historic building was very cosy, and it was like going back in time. The room was very clean and the bed comfortable with clean luxury sheets, towels and bedding. The birthday meal was fantastic, and the bar had a very festive atmosphere.

This is an amazing little hideaway. Beautiful views, and all so well thought out with stylish interiors. Great use of space inside the huts with everything you would need. Lovely welcome hamper on arrival. Our two children are 9 and 13 and managed fine in the bunk beds. They loved staying here and lit the outdoor fire both nights. We had gorgeous weather and used the bbq and outdoor space alot. We were so lucky to be one of the first customers at the Roost. Great and useful communication from the hosts. I’m sure this place will be booked up very quickly. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Full of independant shops and so great to see the town so busy! We also went to the Saturday market which was easy to find whilst wandering up the high street of interesting shops! The market was great, street food and independent traders, great vibes!

Totnes a lovely town with plenty of coffee and pasty shops.

Totnes a lovely town with plenty of coffee and pasty shops. Interesting buildings with Markets taking place on a regular basis. Only one coffee shop opens at 8 am - thank goodness for that one. Only gripe was WH Smith not open until 9 am. Surely customers who want their early morning paper prefer the shop to be open from 8 am at least - it is a newsagent. To purchase a newspaper to go with the early morning coffee, cannot be done in Totnes.

I like the feel of the town, especially the main street with a great many small independent shops and places to eat, etc. I can easily understand why my friends who have chosen to live in Totnes are very content to be there. There seems to be lot going on, especially for people who are interested in arts & crafts and/or working to save the planet and foster peace and justice in our war-torn world. I enjoyed a couple of walks along the river Dart. And I happened upon the Guildhall, which is well worth a visit. I was interested to learn about the history of Totnes over the centuries. I knew little about the town, except that it was the first Transition Town. My only disappointment was that so many people seem to depend on their own private cars for transport. I imagined how much more pleasant the main street would be, if it were pedestrianized. Delivery vehicles and taxis could be exempted from a traffic ban.

Totnes is an ideal location for exploring the surrounding S.Devon area. Eg. Convenient bus, steam train or ferry travel options to Dartmouth/Kingswear. The town itself is full of independent shops, and has quite a 'laidback vibe'. A variety of pubs/cafes for food and drink, with all preferences catered for.

Plenty to see in this relatively small area.

Plenty to see in this relatively small area. The Devon scenery is lush, soothing and delightful, even in occasional welcome rain showers. Driving around is generally a pleasure; the roads don't seem too crowded even during school holidays. Be careful with route planning however, as Google Maps for example is inclined to send you down unnecessarily long stretches of EXTREMELY narrow lanes flanked by hedges. Locals will often expect you to reverse to the nearest passing place, not such an easy manouevre if you don't practice it regularly!

Lovely, busy, friendly, old pub in the beating heart of Totnes. Great, warm welcome from our very busy host, all admin and entry instructions dealt with in a trice. Spacious, clean room filled with sunshine, very comfortable bed, and a delicious breakfast available a step across the street. The location could not be better, in the midst of interesting shops, on one of the most fascinating and pretty high streets in England.

Lovely room a little on the small side but very comfortable and with all that we required. Bathroom spacious and a well appointed with a good shower in a decent sized cubicle(Better than most hotels) All meals including breakfast were very good and the restaurant menu excellent. Based around locally sourced products generous portions all beautifully cooked and all at a very competitive price.

Fantastic breakfast and good pub-style evening meals, although a bigger choice for pescatarians would have been appreciated. The hotel is in a central location for Totnes which is a thriving market town complete with castle, and a convenient base to visit beautiful, south Devon. The public areas are friendly and the staff are super.

Warm, clean cosy room. There were views of the garden and surrounding hills from the window of our room. Lovely two course breakfast with lots of tea, coffee and toast.
