FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Lovely, clean city with loads to offer whether it's a bit of history you're interested in or just chilling spending time with family and friends. Loads of choice for places to eat or drink. Can highly recommend Bennetts cafe right next to the Minster for a pit stop cuppa and a snack. Also highly recommend Minster Walk Guest House if you're looking for somewhere a bit different and close to the centre of York, it's a smashing place to stay! Top tip : comfy footwear!!

York is an amazing place to visit with so much to see.

York is an amazing place to visit with so much to see. It is all within walking distance. But easier to get around the places of interest if on foot There are some cobbled streets and narrow pavements in the Shambles area which add to its charm but could cause problems if mobility was an issue. But other areas were quite accessible and it is a wonderful place to visit

The attractions of York are well documented and need no further comment. However I would particularly recommend the Castle Museum and the Jorvik Experience. A walk around the City Walls is also a must. We liked The Ivy Brasserie so much that we went there twice! Betty's Tea Rooms were so busy all day and evening that we were unable to visit.

Lovely room with an en suite bathroom. Comfortable rooms with everything you need for an overnight stay. Mark was extremely helpful and lovely throughout the whole duration of our stay. He helped us to park at the accommodation and allowed us early entry into our room, he offered advice on the local area and best things to go and see with lots of history too! The hotel was quiet with the other guests and was in the most perfect location for York City centre. Would highly recommend booking here for your stay in York. Thank you!

The judges lodging is a boutique hotel in an old Georgian house full of character in the York city centre. We stayed for three nights in a feature double room. Toiletries were the white company, which was a nice touch. The room contained lovely period features and the bed was big and comfortable.

The location was very good, easy to get in and out of York city centre, definitely a good thing. There is also a car park that allows you to at least leave your car when you go to explore York (although there is a charge). Everything worked well in the hotel room which is good.
