England Through The Ages
Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Lovely old town full of character.
Lovely old town full of character. You can do all the essential things by foot. We enjoyed evensong at York Minster (and it's free !). The York Castle museum was good but a little dark. Shopping is great with lots of the major stores (Marks and Primark for example) and loads of boutique shops. Betty's tea room is a must - there is always a queue but it goes quite quickly outside of mealtimes. It had good shops down the shambles and a good market.
It had good shops down the shambles and a good market. Could have done with some more cafes that did English breakfasts. We took awhile to find one, but when we did it was good and value for money. Good fish and chip restaurant down the shambles. There is alot of history to York so enjoyed that. An an amazing historical city, with all amenities very close to each other. York Minster was awesome, and we loved the History Museum and gardens. The Railway museum and Jorkvic Viking museum are absolutely essential to visit - they were both superb ! The beauty of York Minster and the historic charm of the Shambles is noteworthy as is the tranquility of the riverside walk and peaceful York Museum park. My wife is wheelchair bound and York’s pavements and walkways are very hard to negotiate. Cracked, uneven paving and cobbles with dropped kerbs so poorly engineered as to be unfit for purpose. York is great for a short break taking the train to ease the strain. Lots of places to discover history of the area and wonderful ancient walls to walk round and see views of the city.
