The location is excellent. Kato Zakros is the perfect place to relax. Even in the middle of the summer, it is not crowded. It has some small, but delicious and relatively cheap restaurants next to the beach. The Zakros Minoan palace is a 5-minute walk from the property. The exit of the Gorge of the Dead is two minutes away. Xerokampos, which is famous for its sandy beaches, is a 20-minute drive. The property itself is excellent for a family; it is clean, it has all the facilities you may need, and has a perfect view to the sea.

Most travelers will arrive in Crete through Chania or Heraklion, then either drive or get a bus eastward. They might do as I did and hop to Agios Nikolaos, then to Sitia, and finally will travel further east to the small town of Zakros. At that point there are two ways to the village of Kato Zakros; either a short drive or a hike through the Gorge of the Dead. The Gorge is not particularly long but the ground is covered in loose rocks, which means every step must be carefully taken and you must be physically apt with good mobility. For the love of God, make sure you and your friends wear good boots with ankle support. I took the hike on a nice breezy day. The Gorge of the Dead is where the ancient Minoans of the region laid their dead to rest — and if you go there on a quiet day you'll understand why. It is a place of introspective peace and quiet. I arrived at Kato Zakros around noon, finding a very quiet and peaceful village in the process of preparing itself for the approaching tourist season. The studio was atop a hill, with an absolutely stunning view of the village, the Minoan ruins of Kato Zakros, the olive groves and the sea. Georgia welcomed me with food and drink, and her hospitality was so great that during my stay I even had lunch with her and her family. The studio is a cozy, compact home with a small kitchen and spacious bathroom, and a bed with some kind of magical capacity to induce incredible sleep. The whole place gives off a sense of peace and quiet that cannot be conveyed with words. After crossing the Gorge of the Dead all the problems and stresses of life back home are so far away. The insanely wealthy burn small fortunes building excessive homes that cannot give the sense of peace that Georgia's studio gives. Plus the combo of Gorge of the Dead + Georgia's Studio + Minoan Palace + Beach is the kind of thing psychologists should seriously consider a high tech therapy method.

This was absolute paradise. The owner was nice and personal. The staff was always ready to help. Never slept this close to the sea before. That was wonderful. Stars at night. Great food. All facilities were lovely. Free beds on the beach. Taxi service. I would definitely recommend this place.

The apartment was super clean and complete with everything you need, the furniture is really beautiful, there is a bed for toddlers in the living room, also toys for kids in the cabinet, it has a very spacious balcony with windows to control the wind and with extra seats and extra beds, the kitchen have many appliances with very pretty tiles in the wall, induction stove that makes cooking super easy, the fridge was super clean and new, the bathroom has a bathtub and a very nice shower, the bed is very comfortable, the floor is amazing, the decoration is very beautiful, is an excellent place 10/10.

Largely a number of tavernas and rent rooms behind a mixed shingle / sand beach. It is quiet, as it is quite small, but this is because it is at the end of the paved road and due to government restrictions on development (to protect the Minoan palace site). So, if you want a quiet, relatively undeveloped location right on the beach, but with the benefit of a number of different tavernas to choose from and accommodation nearby, this is it. It is an excellent base for exploring the local area, especially if you like walking and/or historic sites.

Beautiful beach with free sunbeds and umbrellas and friendly tavernas onto the beach. Its slight remoteness means its not overrun with tourists and is very peaceful. Do get up early to walk the Gorge - stunning.

Ideal for active folks who like an authentic Greek beach hamlet vibe. Nice terrace, good views, lovely staff. Good food. It’s not a big room but has great lighting. Mosquito spray helped our dinner experience ;), thanks for offering it to us. All in all, a comfy restful overnight!

Kato Zakros is lower Zakros, a very small village with several tavernas, a pebbly beach with parasols & loungers and a tiny harbour where the fishing boats come and go. No shops here. Picturesque, set in spectacular hills and to stay in a local house or apartment is bliss. A 10-15 minute trip in car takes you to Ano Zakros, that's upper Zakros which has plenty of shops, supermarkets and a Pharmacy. Visit the mountain source of the water spring here. Fabulous. There is a really excellent Natural History Museum here in Ano Zakros- a must to visit, €3, where a wonderful knowledgeable lady gave us terrific information on local area. Tavernas here too. I forgot to mention the Gorge...a great walk through the Gorge of the Dead, I think so called because Minoan people may have buried their dead in the holes in the hills. Stunning place. Long walk, about 4 hours from beginning to end coming out at different place.

Kato Zagros has an excellent beach, in fact more than one.

Kato Zagros has an excellent beach, in fact more than one. Plenty of parking. Choice of beachside restaurants. A great Minoan excavation and the Zagros (Deadman) Gorge walk starts in the town. There are many walks to explore. Serviced by daily tour buses.

This is a place of peace and quiet. Great area for walking.

This is a place of peace and quiet. Great area for walking. There is the archealogical site, the gorge of the Dead to visit. Lots of choice for eating, i would recommend Akrogiali Taverna. Our accommodation was up high above the beach, which was not so good for anyone with problems walking.

A hidden gem on the Eastern Coast of Crete. Outstanding garden settings, very nicely decorated, with lots of places to hang out, take a nap or have a drink. Rooms are small but very convenient and comfortable and have a true cretan charm. Welcoming was very nice and the staff did all they could to allow us to have a nice stay. The hotel is perfectly located a short walk from the Zakros Gorge or the minoan site, and 500m from the nice beach of Kato Zakros with great tavernas. We had a great stay and would love to come back in the future!

The location is up a steep hill 1.4km from Kato Zakros. Access to the studio is on narrow, winding and rough road. If you are not used to driving on Crete, this might be a challenge. The bed and pillows were comfortable, and it was very quiet at night, but we are not used to a small double bed, so did not sleep well. The small kitchen area is extremely well equipped. AC was efficient, but rather noisy. There is good storage for clothing. The host has provided many details to make this an attractive and comfortable studio.

Kato Zakros is a quiet little village right by the seaside. The room is literally few steps away from the beach and tavernas (but worry not, they close around 9-10, so we slept in peace, listening to the sound of waves). Perfect, cozy, budget room to explore rocky mountains of Eastern Crete. Owner is really friendly too :)
