Important Port of Saintly Significance
The Apulian capital Bari has been known for its port since Roman times. Nowadays there are 2 harbours: cruise ships and ferries to Greece and Croatia depart from the new port, while the old port shelters fishing vessels.
Between them is a seafront road bordering the real attraction – the old town. Narrow, cobbled streets lead under arches to hidden piazzas with pavement cafes. Many are on adjoining Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, where the old Roman road is exposed.
The imposing 12th-century Norman-Swabian Castle guards the west of the historic centre, and the simple Cathedral of San Sabino is from the same period. Equally understated is the Basilica of St Nicholas, housing relics of the saint. Pope John Paul II once prayed there, which may have given rise to Bari Airport’s name: Karol Wojtyła Airport.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the meeting point of the old town and the Murat district, built under orders of Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Facing each other across this street are the colourful façades of the municipal office and Piccinni Theatre, though most prestigious is the Petruzzelli Theatre opera house.
Booking.com’s Bari accommodation includes luxury hotels by the Fiera del Levante, cheap city centre apartments, and B&Bs near the train station. For families, the slides and swimming pools of Bari Acquapark make a great day out.

The newer part of Bari is much larger than I expected. The old town area is interesting and while there are plenty of visitors it's not as crowded as the major tourist cities. If you're there to visit the historic sites, you can pretty much do that in a day or two. We enjoyed the visit to the castle. Depending where you stay the prices of accommodation will differ . Like I stayed in the local area near the main train station and New buses transit center , plus close to supermarket called euro spin, which is Italy. I stayed in a safe and secure Air BNB , with a shared bathroom and kitchen. For around $600 Australia dollars for 12 nights which is great value for money in Bari .Guest review byPeterAustralia - 6.0

Bari is packed and apart from the city beach, not very interesting in terms of things to do. The cultural and historical stuff can be seen in 1 day and it's time to move to Polignano a Mare, where all the boat related stuff happens. Restaurants are generally expensive and the staff is smug. Bari is a lovely city.
Bari is a lovely city. We loved the new and old town and managed to see most of it in two days. It is a noisy stay in the old town so make sure you have a place that is quiet.
