Sardinia in a Nutshell
The Sardinian capital, Cagliari has a historic old town, busy port and one of the island’s best beaches. The sweeping stretch of sand at Poetto offers great summer nightlife, and just inland is Molentargius lagoon, where flamingos nest against the backdrop of the city.
Cagliari is spread over a small hill and the oldest part – Quartiere Castello – lies at the top. There are far-reaching views from Bastion San Remy, its main entrance point. Medieval city walls lead from here to the simple cathedral, and nearby is the 18th-century Palazzo Regio.
By one of the original city gates is the National Archaeological Museum, housing a collection of Phoenician and Roman artefacts from the city’s Tuvixeddu Necropolis. There are also displays of the nuraghic civilisation whose former dwellings pepper Sardinia. The most impressive is Su Nuraxi north of Cagliari.
Just outside the walls are remains of a Roman amphitheatre, next to the university botanical gardens. Orange tree-lined streets descend the hill towards the seafront where restaurants and bars can be found. Cagliari FC play at Sant’Elia Stadium along the coast and opposite is the Sardinia International Fair, an important conference venue.

Picturesque city with a nice vibe close to the beach of Poetto and the amazing beaches around Villasimius. Mid september it didn’t feel overly touristy and no issues booking tables at the more popular restaurants. The Marina area is packed with restaurants and walking distance to Quartieri Castello and Bonaria. Recommend checking out the area towards Bonaria since it’s less touristy and has amazing coffee shops, plus parking outside the ZTL zone. Best pasta restaurants in the Marina area were Impasto and Sa Domu Sarda. Cagliari itself can be enjoyed during three full days, the interesting areas are quite small. Stayed for five nights in the Marina area. It is a nice city but seems rather run down with a lot of empty buildings and graffiti. You can see everything there is to see in two days - just by gently walking around. I recommend the cathedral (and crypt) and St. Remy (for the view). If you have the time, take a trip on one of the small boats that do a tour of the nearby coves, stopping for swim along the way. If you're on a budget, a pizza is your best option and whereas some restaurants near the harbour can be a little pricey, there are plenty more reasonably priced on Corso Emanuele II.Guest review byMatthewBelgium - 6.0

Not the best City in Italy, obviously, but still has some (Italian) flair to it. We had a flight that arrived in the evening so decided to spend the night there and set off the next morning.
