Sardinia in a Nutshell
The Sardinian capital, Cagliari has a historic old town, busy port and one of the island’s best beaches. The sweeping stretch of sand at Poetto offers great summer nightlife, and just inland is Molentargius lagoon, where flamingos nest against the backdrop of the city.
Cagliari is spread over a small hill and the oldest part – Quartiere Castello – lies at the top. There are far-reaching views from Bastion San Remy, its main entrance point. Medieval city walls lead from here to the simple cathedral, and nearby is the 18th-century Palazzo Regio.
By one of the original city gates is the National Archaeological Museum, housing a collection of Phoenician and Roman artefacts from the city’s Tuvixeddu Necropolis. There are also displays of the nuraghic civilisation whose former dwellings pepper Sardinia. The most impressive is Su Nuraxi north of Cagliari.
Just outside the walls are remains of a Roman amphitheatre, next to the university botanical gardens. Orange tree-lined streets descend the hill towards the seafront where restaurants and bars can be found. Cagliari FC play at Sant’Elia Stadium along the coast and opposite is the Sardinia International Fair, an important conference venue.

You can see everything there is to see in two days - just by gently walking around. I recommend the cathedral (and crypt) and St. Remy (for the view). If you have the time, take a trip on one of the small boats that do a tour of the nearby coves, stopping for swim along the way. If you're on a budget, a pizza is your best option and whereas some restaurants near the harbour can be a little pricey, there are plenty more reasonably priced on Corso Emanuele II.Guest review byMatthewBelgium - 6.0

Not the best City in Italy, obviously, but still has some (Italian) flair to it. We had a flight that arrived in the evening so decided to spend the night there and set off the next morning. The historical centre is wonderful but a bit of a walk up hill if you are staying down near the port or the train station. You can take either the No 7 or No 8 bus up to the top. The beaches near to Cagliari get quite crowded. We opted for a day to Nora which is archaeological site and it has a lovely beach next to the site. Some great cafes and restaurants. we stayed in the castello area which was lovely. Full of character however it is a very steep area so there was always a climb and steps back to the apartment. We found this fine but others with mobility issues may need to consider this. The area was very quiet, lovely restaurants and bars nearby. You can cook in the kitchen if you get enough of them. The location is perfect; you can buy the bus tickets across the road in the Tabaco shop near the coffee shop where you eat breakfast. The bus takes about 20 minutes to Poetto Beach, which is lovely. You can take the train to Cagliari from the airport and return in 10 minutes.
