Vibrancy, Vespas, Vesuvius
Undulating beside the Bay of Naples, this UNESCO World Heritage city is a maze of narrow streets and funicular railways. Although it has an incredible array of churches and monuments, it’s the sheer energy, pulsating life, and buzz of Vespas that really make it exciting.
At first you could mistake this for chaos, but given time you’ll see there’s method to the madness. The stunning, curved portico of the Royal Palace. The perfectly thin pizzas which originated here. The red pepper trinkets to ward off the evil eye adorning practically every old town doorway. All are crafted to perfection.
While all this goes on at street level, below is Underground Naples – a series of visitable tunnels and even a Graeco-Roman theatre which you stop at before emerging into someone’s house!
Head up to the Posillipo area for stunning views of the city and Vesuvius in the distance. The volcano itself can be visited and looking down from it towards Pompeii and Herculaneum gives context to the thousands of artefacts now on display in the city’s National Archaeological Museum.

I have found Naples to be a welcoming and energetic city. I never felt unsafe walking around during the day and the streets are lively and interesting. There are so many wonderful cultural sights, from the numerous churches to the incredible archeological museum. Tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum led by by an archaeologist was worthwhile. I really enjoyed going to the opera. I sat in a box which was hot and stuffy. I think it would be better to sit in the stalls. The Galleria d'Italia had an excellent exhibition of Neapolitan art from 1610 to modern times. I advise booking ahead to visit the Archaeological museum. Standing in a queue in the hot sun is not fun. I caught the funicular to Fuga and then walked to the Castle St Elmo for the view. Very busy and noisy town. It is even difficult to visit, at least the old town, due to crowds of people in the streets from the morning till the end of the day plus motorbikes everywhere finding their way among people. Pizza in "da Michele" is indeed extraordinary and I recommend also Pescheria Azzura for the fresh fish. In general it is easy to navigate in the city by metro and even funiculars that drive people up to Vomero Hill. If you are lucky there will be a concert of Italian music in Piazza del Plebiscito, which will be worth watching.Guest review byAlicjaPoland - 10.0

The people were very friendly and helpful. I loved the food and was ver affordable the service was impressive and impeccable. Just be very careful outside train station area's there are people who will be asking for money they are not Italian's. Shopping is also very good and reasonably priced. Overall i loved Napels. We stayed near the marina which made ferry travel very easy. Amazing food. Very, very busy. Unfortunately had to use a wheelchair, was difficult and stressful at times. Overall a good base but likely to explore outwith the city for a slightly less busy experience. Many ‘wheelchair accessible’ areas were blocked by vehicles or elevators broken. For me the attitude of the hosts was most important, I was travelling from already in Italy, so the collection and leaving of the keys was arranged last minute and they were super accommodating.
