The Jewel in the Sicilian Crown
As you admire crystal-clear turquoise seas from a Taormina piazza swathed in vibrant pink blossom, you could be forgiven for thinking that you were in paradise. The stunning location of this picturesque town is its crowning glory.
However, it’s not its only glory. Surrounded by trees just below the main town, the Greek Theatre is also a triumph. Its largely intact seating offers wonderful views across the stage towards Mount Etna fuming away in the distance. Spine-tingling summer performances are still held here, and several of the town’s bars also offer live music.
Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of Taormina, from Piazza Corvaja to the 13th-century cathedral, and houses many shops and cafés. Midway along is Piazza IX Aprile, whose clock tower and church are overlooked by a rocky hill topped with a castle.
A cable car runs from the town down to the beautiful Taormina beaches (where the train station is also found). At the centre of the W-shaped bay is little Isola Bella, an island nature reserve. To the south-west is the long stretch of sand at Giardini-Naxos, and north is the bay by Mazzaró.
As you would expect of Sicily’s most beautiful resort, there is no shortage of Taormina accommodation on Booking.com, including 5-star hotels on the beach, town centre apartments and luxury B&Bs.

Taormina was lovely, I would definitely recommend going to anyone. I would also recommend comfy walking shoes as a lot of it is up and down and to be aware that the public transport isn’t anyways reliable and to maybe bare this in mind when needed to get to trips as we almost missed a couple of our trips due to the buses not turning up. What a magical place! Corso Umberto was incredible. Such beautiful artisan shops everywhere and the gelato and cannoli were to die for. It is a beautiful place to go but ruined by over tourism, over priced restaurants, average quality food and designer stores. For me, it is not the real Italy. We stayed at the top of the town so the views were great but beach not easily accessible without transport. If you have mobility issues think carefully before visit as lots of steps and can be hilly in places. The shops were bespoke and a wonderful assortment of restaurants available although very touristy. If we had transportation it would’ve been great to explore at a different level. This is a gem of a hotel, spotlessly clean and comfortable and perfectly located, close to the main centre of Taormina. The hotel staff were really fantastic. Warm and welcoming and nothing was ever too much. Our son unfortunately needed to see a doctor during our stay and the hotel staff really bent over backwards to help.
