The Jewel in the Sicilian Crown
As you admire crystal-clear turquoise seas from a Taormina piazza swathed in vibrant pink blossom, you could be forgiven for thinking that you were in paradise. The stunning location of this picturesque town is its crowning glory.
However, it’s not its only glory. Surrounded by trees just below the main town, the Greek Theatre is also a triumph. Its largely intact seating offers wonderful views across the stage towards Mount Etna fuming away in the distance. Spine-tingling summer performances are still held here, and several of the town’s bars also offer live music.
Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of Taormina, from Piazza Corvaja to the 13th-century cathedral, and houses many shops and cafés. Midway along is Piazza IX Aprile, whose clock tower and church are overlooked by a rocky hill topped with a castle.
A cable car runs from the town down to the beautiful Taormina beaches (where the train station is also found). At the centre of the W-shaped bay is little Isola Bella, an island nature reserve. To the south-west is the long stretch of sand at Giardini-Naxos, and north is the bay by Mazzaró.
As you would expect of Sicily’s most beautiful resort, there is no shortage of Taormina accommodation on Booking.com, including 5-star hotels on the beach, town centre apartments and luxury B&Bs.

The authenticity of the small town is fantastic!! The majority of the town has maintained rustic, quaint and historic architecture building the town around this. It is beautiful clean and compact , yet full of excellent restaurants, bars and shops - most are classy and sophisticated. The people are all super nice and friendly. I would recommend doing a guided tour here as it is full of history ! I would be wary in the height of the season as it is so small and I imagine the small town centre would be crammed. It is a must in Sicily. You should also visit the other mountain-top town of Castelmola, possible by bus if you don't have a car. We visited the gorge and Etna. Need to be cautious walking on roads as no footpath but the drivers are mostly courteous. Pool is very deep but the hotel provide noodle floats that allow everyone to enjoy the pool regardless of your abilities. Breakfast is fantastic, so much choice. Staff are wonderful, very friendly and accommodating. Entertainment in the evenings is nice, pianist each night and one event night. Rooms were comfortable.
