Italy’s Answer to Vienna
Near the Slovenian border, Trieste combines the waterside setting of Venice with the elegance of Vienna. The Habsburgs ruled here for over 500 years and built Miramare Castle on a rocky outcrop to the north-west. Their other influences include stately Piazza Unità d’Italia, looking out to sea and spectacularly lit at night.
But this is just a glimpse into Trieste's long and fascinating history. The 1st-century Riccardo Arch hides in a narrow street, and part-way up the hills behind the city centre are Roman theatre remains, while columns from the Roman forum stand next to San Giusto castle and cathedral.
The most photographed church is Sant’Antonio Nuovo, overlooking a boat-lined canal. The nearby Stock Exchange has a colonnaded façade and its square houses some of the city’s shops. The most popular cultural attraction is the Revoltella Museum of modern art, while more sobering is Risiera di San Sabba, a former concentration camp near the Palatrieste and Nereo Rocco sports stadiums.
Watersports include windsurfing and kitesurfing from the port which is an important coffee importer. Unsurprisingly, the city’s Viennese-style coffee houses serve top-quality brews, and the best is reportedly Caffè San Marco, once frequented by famous authors.

Nice city with history. Unfortunately I was not lucky with B&B were I stayed and it was pouring rain with flood I tried 5 restaurants during the rain all of them said wére full at the end a hamburger restaurant accepted that I get in. Trieste is a great "medium" size city.
Trieste is a great "medium" size city. Not the WOW attractions (or crowds) of Venice or Firenze, quieter and a little more user friendly. Simpler and smaller museos, churches and sites. All of this is fine, Just temper your expectations. Central city is very walkable. Great, easy to use bus system. Day Bus trip to Slovenia was interesting and fun. (there are several) Hop on/off Bus is good way to see city. We were so glad to have stayed in Trieste rather than Venice to catch our cruise, Trieste was so charming and beautiful!! We highly recommend to any/everyone one to fly into and stay in Trieste rather than Venice! Trieste has a small airport so make transportation reservations through your hotel before arriving. It cost us $150US for transportaion fee from airport to city center because it is quiet a distance & we were 30 minutes late due to weather so they tacked on a $30 late arrival fee to the original $120 but still worth every penny we spent!!Guest review byBroussardUnited States - 10.0

Steeped in history, a different vibe to other Italian cities. The Austrian influences are still evident in subtle ways which makes the trip all the more interesting. The location was very handy, just 3 minutes walking to the train/ bus station, which is very good to come and go from the airport which is not close by Trieste. Also in front of the hotel there is the bus stop to go to Miramare castle which is not close by city center so you will need that as well.
