Karuizawa is a little gem "off the beaten track" for mist travelers to Japan. A tourist loop bus makes it easy to explore. There are coffee shops, restaurants, shops, & onsens. Excellent hiking too! We had a good time at the Ski Resort and the Shopping Outlets and plenty of Food Choices. We were able to hike going to Hoshino Olsen and also had a wonderful breakfast in the area. We spent a couple of nights here so my kids can do a ski lesson on one of the days. One could certainly choose to take a day trip from Tokyo for such an activity. However, we wanted to get away from the big city that is Tokyo and it was such a lovely experience. By some stroke of luck, it started snowing as well so that's a bonus for my kids. Around the train station and at the Prince hotel 'mall' there is a 7-11 and a number of restaurants that are pretty good. We did not manage to visit the falls unfortunately. Karuizawa offers an amazing small town charm with excellent food, friendly people, and accessible nature. Definitely check out the Japanese Giant Flying Squirrel tour to view Musasabi! Had a small store selling vegetables next to Family mart (which is opposite the hotel). Hotel has a nice lounge to rest, to eat and read books. Room was catered for 3 person (2 persons had a double bed each, the 3rd person had a futon to sleep on). Beds were comfortable. It's also linked to the premium outlet mall which is less than 5 mins walk. Very convenient! The Prince property is made up of multiple hotels, and we were lucky to book this hotel as it tied in with our skiing plans.
