The atmosphere, the ceremony offered and the opportunity practice Shakyo was something unique and that I highly value. A beautiful experience that I recommend to whoever wants to experience the life in a Buddhist monastery.

We are over the moon to see the Buddha relic at this temple! The staff is very kind and tried to introduce Buddhism in English! After the morning chanting, we had a temple tour and saw the Buddha relic 💯

Super! 100% recommended! Very kind host. Also great welcome with lots of information about what to do in Koyasan. It was also very clean. The 2 showers and 2 toilets were more then enough. The pocket rooms slept very good. It is located next to the cemetery, so good for doing the evening walk. We had a great stay. Thank you!

Excellent, would stay again in a heartbeat. They were fantastic with my wife’s allergies and provided delicious changes that didn’t leave her wanting during the stay. It was clean and comfortable and we loved the space. Everyone was polite and helpful regardless of language barrier and it was a really relaxing stay whilst learning about the history of Koyasan.

The host Paula is a wonderful woman who is friendly and helpful all the ways. The vibe of the hut is so peaceful and a perfect match of that of Koyashan. I have previously tried temple stay before. To me, it was even better to stay in Koyasan Space.

The temple is relatively small, but very cosy. They have a beautiful rock garden and a pond with koi fish. The monks and the staff are very friendly. You can attend a 40 min meditation at 5pm and a service at 6am. The temple is located somewhat outside of the city centre (10 min walk) which means that there are no day tourists (only those who stay overnight - still many). I stayed for 3 nights, during the day the temple was very peaceful. I was staying in an expensive room with a private bath+shower and a great view onto a small rock garden, which was very peaceful. Most rooms don’t have own facilities, though, and you’ll have to observe bathing hours (6-9pm) to use the communal baths (separate for men and women). The food was excellent.

This is a world heritage site not to be missed.

This is a world heritage site not to be missed. The kindness and quiet beauty and the FOOD were heavenly. A friend suggested we go and stay a night in a temple for the full experience, (although a day trip is fine,) and we are so glad that we did. The Buddhist Okunoin cemetery is the largest in Japan and is lit by lanterns at night for a beautiful otherworldly (but actually this world! ;) unforgettable evening walk. Beautiful temples and sacred sites to visit, and many shops and little cafes to enjoy. We stayed in the Sanboin temple and were so delighted by our experience.

Don't miss touring the cemetery.

Don't miss touring the cemetery. It is amazing with so many different types of monuments and statuary. We toured it without a guide during the day light hours and feel that we really didn't miss anything by not seeing it by moonlight. The town has an ancient feel to it and is worth spending at least one night. I just wish that there were more choices for hotels as the only choices seem to be a Guest House and a multitude of Monasteries.

Koyasan is a historic, spiritual, naturally beautiful location. The ability to be around active temples and attend fire ceremony was unforgettable. The information center and excellent bus system made it easy to navigate. However, if you like to walk, most sights are easily walked to, as it is quite flat. There were several nice coffee houses and the place that offers night tours of Okunoin also is a bar in the evening, serving excellent local craft beers. A surprise.

I came here for the history and the experience of staying in a monastery/pilgrim lodging, but I left with much more than that, as all the people I met here were wonderful, from fellow travelers to local cafe owners. One word of advice would be to take your time exploring Oku no In cemetery, as it's worth a good long contemplative walk.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat. We arrived on a Friday afternoon, wondered into the info centre Saturday & they were very helpful. Walked through the cemetery & then had lunch in one of the cafes open. Not many open on a Saturday or Sunday. Sunday a.m we experience the Ceremony half by the Monks in the main temple. Wouldn’t visit again in the winter as it’s extremely cold.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely. Would have enjoyed having more time to visit the town. We only stayed one night (which is good, because it was very expensive). However, the train logistics from Okayama meant that we ararived in Koyasan about 2pm and so had very little time to see it. We left after lunch the following day. Two fuller days and one night would have been ideal.

We loved the fact that we stayed in a temple with no much ammenities! Our room was simple but very nice, the temple was very big and the monks there were so friendly! We enjoyed the morning pray, the dinner and breakfast and the bath! Koyasan is a really calming place, so different from the rest of the places we 've been in Japan! We want to thank the student monk that helped us the last day!

Tourists beware: this is not an hotel. This is a temple, and as a temple it must be respected in all its aspects. The structure is not “rich” but is comfortable and in a very beautiful setting. The garden is pure magic and the monks are friendly and willing to share their knowledge. The position is perfect for visiting Koyasan and its treasures. Please, respect this place.

The experience is the best thing, definitely. If you want to live the full Japanse experience, you should definitely book a night in Koyasan. It was amazing to expend the night in a room inside the temple, with the classical clothes, food and so on. The morning pray was also a good experience to enjoy.
