We really enjoyed camping midway through our Japan trip! The campground is well set up and we had everything we needed to ensure a cozy stay. They provided sleeping bags in addition to regular bedding since it was a cold night (on top of heaters). They also have a lot of kitchen items for use which was fun to choose from! The addition of the deck and foot onsen during sunset was spectacular! The food that we arranged was great! We would stay here again.

Every single thing in this place is beautiful with the most wonderfully designed restoration work I’ve ever seen. The owners clearly love and care for this place and have done everything to make it welcoming for guests. We absolutely loved it. We hiked from the door to Tsumago down the Nakasendo trail and got the bus back. We got most meals from the grocery shop 50m away. The location across from the train makes it perfect for getting around. We loved our stay!

Amazing stay in beautifully restored traditional Japanese house. The hosts are really friendly and welcoming. Dinner and breakfast was superb. One of our favourite stays in Japan! Our room had an en-suite shower which was very convenient after a day of hiking.

Just one word to describe our stay: PHENOMENAL! The staff, the room, the hotel, its location, their onsens, the food. Everything was perfect and beyond our imagination! Our room was so big and comfy and clean, we even had a massage chair and also hot-air syringe. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They also had one person who could speak English pretty well. It was raining when we arrived and this went perfect with the hot onsens. We also booked the private onsen beforehand, but I personally liked the outdoor onsen more. You also have your own dining room with traditional Japanese food. The dinner has a very economic price for what you get (a seven-course menu). They also took into account that we are pescetarian. You also have the opportunity to use their shuttle service, which was very punctual and convenient. My husband was fasting, so he had to have his breakfast before sunrise. They even brought his breakfast to the room!

This was a really special place to have had the chance to stay in. Beautiful old building with so many original features and character (paper sliding walls, futons, tatami mats). It was a total contrast to modern identikit hotels and a great opportunity to experience a traditional Japanese wooden home whilst on the Nakasendo trail. Our pre-ordered dinner (chicken hot pot) was amazing and the simple breakfast was ready to help ourselves to in the little kitchen. Wish we could have stayed longer. The manager was so welcoming.

Host’s communication was exceptional! They were incredibly helpful—giving us great local recommendations, guiding us around the area, and even helping us order an evening meal (which was fantastic!). The location is perfect, just a short walk from the train station and an ideal base for the Nakasendo hike. The place itself is spotless, comfortable, and very well-equipped. Honestly, we couldn’t recommend this stay more. Everything exceeded our expectations.

Nagiso is a small village , and a convenient stop when walking from Magome and Tsumago when hiking the nakasendo. ( accommodation in those two villages is very difficult to obtain). Excellent cafe across from the station but there was only one restaurant open on the night we were there , mid week.

Nagiso itself is an unremarkable city, but the surrounding area, the so called 'Japanese Alps' is fantastic. One can visit Tsumago, a preserved ancient Japanese style village, where one can even book a ryokan with kaiseki (excellent Japanese style) dinner, for an overnight stay. The famous 'Nakasendo trail', a 10 km walk in gorgeous countryside, from Magome to Tsumago is a major attraction of the region. Magome can be reached by public bus from Nagiso or Tsumago.

Visited three areas this time: Narai-juku/ Tsumago-juku/ Magome-juku: all are very nicely reserved areas and the hotel is located close except for Narai-juku (70km away). Had a 100% Soba twice at lunch nearby : both are very good. Dropped in several Michi-no-Eki and bought local foods and items at half of them.

A small, authentic village.

A small, authentic village. People mostly use it as a starting point on the Nakasendo Trail, but it's worth a visit: suspension bridge, gardens, village behind, and wonderful people!

It was amazing.

It was amazing. My family of three went to Minami Kiso for three days and two nights to see the starry sky. Unfortunately, due to the unfortunate weather, we were unable to see the starry sky. However, on the day we were leaving, the sky happened to clear up around 2:30 AM, and we were able to enjoy the full moon. Hostel Yui-an, where we stayed, was the best in every way. The renovated old house, the staff, and the people we stayed with. We had a wonderful time. I plan to stay there again.
