Matara, was a good place for me.I stayed at La Polena,for 12 nights.The breakfast was excellent and the lady that made it changed the sheets and cleaned my room twice.I do think that they could give visitors a bottle of water daily.Also a jug to make a cup of tea in each room.Very little money is spend on maintaining the place.Also a sign with numbers for hiring Tuk-Tuk drivers would help.The manager is nice ,but a little slow in offering advice. Island rsetuarant past the Doctors had teh best food.I also needed more veg.So bought carrots,tomatoes and cucumber for myself.Also egg,roll in town. Polhena
Polhena If you are looking for a tourist only beach, this isn't it. Mostly locals and that's why it was so lovely. Very small beach with no waves. A dead reef but some fish and turtles. Local people there were really kind. Which is what made this place special. Matare is part of a chain of cities along the southernmost coast of Sri Lanka. It has beaches for expert surfers as well as beginners and those who just want to be by the beach. The beaches along the coast are all sparkling translucent and enticing. Nice place, but you have to make an effort to explore, which is nice. Not the commercial fully packaged commercial tourist deal. Good quirky options. Has quite a lot of Sri Lanka's history, forts, but courts, and old paved streets, as I said, a great if you make a little effort to explore. One quiet with sand and trees, the other free sunbeds, bar and music! You can see turtles from the restaurant and we could from our room Good shower, lots of hot water. Great breakfast Lots of choice of restaurants expensive and very cheap nearby. In the main quiet, calm resort They are also the only hotel in Sri Lanka ( we stayed in 8 during our month tour) that does not use plastic water bottles in the room, but refills glass ones. It is 5 minutes walk to Polhena beach and 10 minutes to Mirissa beach. It has a relaxing atmosphere. Rooms and all area are really clean. At night you sleep with Sri Lankan animal sounds.
