We loved Izamal, it's such a beautiful city and the people are super friendly. Even the guy selling fresh juice in the town square was really friendly, yelling out good morning. Izamal is a visually stunning town as well, photographers will love it so don't forget your camera! And the food was delicious everywhere we went. Nice little town 70 km away from Merida. Izamal is connected by Oriente & Centro bus line and Maya Train/Tren Maya from Cancun and Merida. Train station is Kimbila, 12 km away. City of 3 cultures like Maya, Colonial, Modern times. Visited by Saint Paul II on a pastoral visit in August 1993, Ancient Maya pyramids, Colonial architecture, excellent restaurants and eateries with local dishes, Yucatan Henequen handicrafts, Henequen & Mezcal distillery, local museum, Monastery San Antonio de Padua with it's famous Blessed Virgin "Our Lady of Izamal " (she is magic and wondersome). Local Mercado with delicious Maya dishes like Cochinita Pibil (pulled pork in Achiote sauce), Morcilla (blood sausage), fried empanadas and longaniza, various taco dishes, local pasta dishes, venado (wild game), freshly baked barras (Yucatecan baguette) and sweat breads, fresh meats, cheeses, poultry, local fruits & veggies, herbs and local Mayan honey (excellent quality and inexpensive). Izamal is served by friendly, bi-lingual tour guides like Jose Carrillo Gonzales and others. Izamal is a lovely place to visit.
Izamal is a lovely place to visit. We had great food there, walk around and visited the pyramid. We also did a carriage ride around the city. This colonial town is a must when exploring the Yicatan.
This colonial town is a must when exploring the Yicatan. It is clean safe and charming. There is a nice little museum in the square and a small craft market each day. There are romantic tours of the town by horse and carriage. The highlight is Convento de San Antonio. It’s a charming small hotel right next to the cathedral. The gardens and pool at the rear are lovely. I received a lovely welcome from Fernanda, who also very kindly arranged an early morning taxi to the Tren Maya and also came to my room to let me know the taxi driver had arrived.
