The room was spacious, clean and very comfortable. We were there in the winter, so it was a bit cold, but the heater was provided so it got warm quickly. The most important for us, our dog was welcome ♥️ The location is just perfect for a stop on a road trip on the east coast.

There is limited accommodation in Hicks Bay and we knew the hotels was a bit run down before we went but looks like maybe they are doing it up. Staff nice and friendly and the room was nice and clean.

Not a lot to do in Hicks Bay itself, walk to old wharf is interesting. In the area there is the East Cape Lighthouse (lots of steps but worth it), most easterly point of New Zealand. Also Manuka honey/oil shop between Hicks Bay and Te Araroa which has a nice cafe as well as selling their products.

There is really not much to do at Hicks Bay. It is a good, mid-point stopping place for a trip around East Cape. The nearby village of Te Araroa was more interesting, but there’s not much to do there either!
