Not much to do in Oamaru, will recommend visiting the quaint museums, Oamaru heritage museum (pay/donate as you wish) and steampunk museum (NZD$15/pax). both were interactive and we enjoyed it with the helpful stuff. the day was a cloudy and rainy so we opted out of visiting the penguins - they have a live youtube stream of the penguins coming home which we watch. We did visit the penguins tour during the day, which was open to public and saw some fur seals relaxing. To watch the penguins coming home, it's NZD$45 per pax, which we thought was a little expensive. + the weather being bad, we decided to watch them online instead.Guest review byVerenaSingapore - 10.0

We went for the penguins but could have spent another day wandering around the Victorian Precient, Steampunk HQ and lovely shops of Oamaru. Also nice that it is only 30 minutes away from Moeraki Boulders. Riverstone Castle and Kitchen make a great stop too on the way down from Christchurch.Guest review byStacyUnited States - 10.0
I love Oamaru for a visit.
I love Oamaru for a visit. It is a very pretty place to visit with the historic area quite special. There are plenty of great places to eat, excellent shopping and being on the coast it has lovely views of the ocean. The blue penguin experience is well worth doing also. Stunning historical buildings, vibrant shops filled with goodies, Sunday market brimming with organic produce - vegetables, honey, cheese, soaps, lotions, coffee and yummy treats. My unit was very comfortable and quiet despite the location just off the highway. It was great having a motel-style kitchen, and my unit had a separate bedroom with single beds in it (I didn't need those, but it was lovely having so much space). There were cattle in the paddock on the hill and a sunny spot to sit just outside the unit that was fairly private. Very friendly owner. Unit was very clean and tidy.
