I have been to Russell a couple of times before but only as...
I have been to Russell a couple of times before but only as day visits so to be honest Ive only stayed in the little township itself but loved that. This time I stayed a night to attend a function. The motel was the icing on the cake because where you stay can make or break a stay anywhere. The view of the harbour below with boats anchored..you couldn't beat. I want to come back..and my friend and I intend to. It's handiness was great. Great afternoon of shopping..something for everyone & delightful 'The Grazing table' cafe for home cooked sweets with delicious coffee. Would have liked to spend more time in the fabulous looking book store..great looking coffee table books on display but I ran out of time. There is something for everyone here. Russell town can easily be walked around in a short time without stopping..but who wants to do that. It's a lovely, interesting quaint place with a lovely harbour looking over to Paihia where you go to connect to main highway..eventually. A day passenger ferry runs regularly from Paihia & to. There are other areas to visit over the hill and the car ferry over from Opua is very quick and efficient. And least but not forgotten..the fantastic Duke of Marlborough hotel and accomodation with its elegance gracing the shoreline is a highlight. I had a lovely evening supportng the Recuse Helicopters fundraising event..it was spent under gorgeous chandelier lighting with all the simple but lovely table settings. Surely a grand gentleman which began in 1827 as 'Johnny Johnsons Grog Shop' by an ex convict come good!Guest review byYvonneNew Zealand - 10.0

Beachfront walk, Pompallier House, French cafe next to Pompallier House, Christ Church historic Anglican church, especially the 10:30am service, the Russell Museum with extensive collections exceptionally well-presented and amazing and only $10. Long Beach. Boat trip to Urupukapuka Island and Cape Brett and Hole in the Rock. A lot of things to do from, the tours, to just walk around town, close proximity, of ferry system. I would have liked to chose to stay longer, did not have enough time. Russell is stunning with beautiful weather and scenery. A slightly quieter pace of life, with lovely shops and attractions. The ferry is excellent and the scenic route to go to Whangarei and southbound by road as an alternative, is also very good. Russell has quick access to Paihia, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, and other places around the Bay of Islands. Chartered boats are available as well.Guest review byP. WrightNew Zealand

There are picnic tables reserved for Lodge residents just above the beach with a fabulous view. We enjoyed eating a picnic dinner out there one evening. Simply fabulous. While there is a pool we didn't use it as the Lodge is only a few steps away from the beach and preferred to swim in the sea. We did warm up in the spa pool after one swim which was very nice. I thought I had booked a basic apartment, considering the price - but the actual property was impeccable. Rooms were recently renovated, fully equiped and comfortable. Host instructions were clear and support when I needed it was amazing. Amenities were great, location was only a few hundred metres walk to waterfront and restaurants. I would go again without a second thought if anywhere else if Russell was my destination and I highly recommend it for others. Actually already have told someone who has a group going up in a few months for a wedding. As soon as I walked in..and friend..we were delighted. After the first night a class of (rowdy) primary school students arrived and stayed in the rooms on the opposite side of our cabin. We were content to stay there, but got an upgrade to a bigger (private) cabin, without having asked. The town of Russell is a 5 minute drive and from there the ferry to Paihia in 15 minutes.
