A small town we stayed overnight only.
A small town we stayed overnight only. Had a beer at the local pub and dinner at the excellent Austin92 restaurant in the evening. Close to the larger centre Oamaru which we spent some time in. The quiet environment in our excellent accommodation made for a relaxing stay towards the end of a busy trip. We stayed in Temuka because the accommodation was cheaper than in Timaru or Geraldine. It is a central location, but there is not much to do while you are there. We walked the main street and found a small antique shop. There was a popular restaurant. Temuka's great main village street is typical of small -town NZ with Victorian and Edwardian frontages above street verandas . Temuka began its European life as "Wallingford" , a town surveyed in 1863 by Samuel Hewlings one of the first Eurpeans to settle in this area. We were only staying the one night (Wednesday) on the way to Dunedin as we left Christchurch when husband got home from work. We looked in the shops before we left and bought meat at the butchers. Hall on the Terrace has amazing facility's , very friendly host , clean and tidy, great value for money. Allowed me to cook a curry. Great wifi and cellphone coverage. Modern decor with mid century vibe.. would have been a great place to hang out for a few days more but alas was only there one night.. easy to walk to high street with its offerings of take away and supermarket.. it was a wonderful pit stop!
