Kim and Heather are running such a beautiful, quaint, understated and welcoming hostel that is positively overflowing with character. There are so many thoughtful and minute details about the way the house has been decorated and arranged, from small eco-friendly motion activated lights laid out around the house that assist travellers in moving around late at night when necessary without waking other guests; to vintage board games laid out upon sitting tables in the upstairs dorm. Everything about this house invites you in, and the size of the house, while perhaps small for some who may be accustomed to larger hostel settings, is perfect for facilitating and allowing for casual and chance interactions between strangers. The house has all the amenities you’d need, it’s a short drive to any number of beautiful landmark locations in the Sierras, and it’s probably one of the most affordable accomodation options with this kind of comfort and heart, that you’ll find in California. The hosts are also readily on hand and live nearby, if ever the guests need anything, and their commitment to fostering community and recognising the importance of preserving and contributing to their local community is really evident in everything they do.

We liked having meals on the outside rustic bar overlooking the beautiful trees. Our patio was private. We appreciate that the property was friendly for our old dog,we never leave him behind. The room decor was nice, the appliances , everything needed was thoughtfully provided. There is a Coffee maker, filters, plates,cups, utensils. There is a large rain shower with shampoo, lotions, body wash,and towels provided. You can walk into town to restaurants. (Good boysenberry milkshakes at The Hut!) The property has unique bbq areas within giant boulders and there is seating around an outdoor fireplace. We enjoyed sitting in the swing out front at night that overlooked the lights,restaurants, and people in town. There is a day use area nearby at Dorabella picnic area where you can launch kayaks, fish, hike, or picnic under the beautiful forest trees. Really liked the check-in coded entry, it was so easy. We were two adults and a dog and we would stay here again.

    We have been coming to Shaver Lake every summer for about 10...

    We have been coming to Shaver Lake every summer for about 10 years. We keep our pontoon boat in one of the local marinas. It is our favorite lake in California - perfect for boating, swimming, fishing & water sports. We usually camp at Camp Edison in our travel trailer and love it there, but their online reservation system has gotten to be impossible. Another camping alternative with hookups would be delightful. Our main issues revolve around food. It would be great to have a more fully stocked market, and more dining choices.

    Edison campground is an ideal spot for RV or tent camping. All 130+ spots have EV car power charging and 110 v electric on each site. There is a marina on site with boat rentals. The lake at 5300 ft is warm enough for swimming--especially in late July or August. The town, for us, lacked enough places to eat-especially for breakfast. We stayed in the hotel at night, and with our son and family in the campground all day. There is a 2nd campground, Dorabelle, also nice but without a.c. power. Air is clean (except fires). Some other places have a lot more hiking trails. I personally prefer Arnold/Lake Alpine on Highway 4 because I have hiked all the trails on both sides if Highway 4 above 6000 ft.

    Great location, we cooked all our meals, because we were there for Christmas and we had a lot of food. Very easy to get around and we just drove around and saw the beautiful scenery. Love it up there.

    It was our first time getting out of our house and had some family time. It was great! Loved the view , the house, the wheather ! This house we stayed in had the large jenga blocks! Has pots and pans available ! Spoons , spatulas knife ect... nice patio! With a gas bbq grill! House was beautiful. Lake was about 20 minutes away. Will most definitely be returning !!
