As Central America’s second-largest country, Honduras is positively packed with sights to explore. The second-largest country in Central America also boasts year-round warm weather, ancient Mayan ruins and dozens of national parks. The country’s Caribbean side is blessed with beaches and charming port towns, as well as the beautiful Bay Islands. Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve lies within the La Mosquitia region and features over 5,000 m2 of preserved tropical rainforest. Tegucigalpa, Honduras’ capital, is located in the highlands region, along with a number of historic hillside towns and the Mayan ruins of Copán. This ancient site needs around two or three days to appreciate properly, with numerous carved stelae (monuments) scattered around. There’s a good selection of accommodation in most major tourist spots, such as Tegucigalpa and Copán Ruinas. The majority are hotels, but you’ll also find apartments, hostels, villas and B&Bs.
