Located just a 1-minute walk from popular Miyagawa Morning Market in the heart of Takayama, Sumiyoshi Ryokan offers homely Japanese-style accommodation in the historic townhouse building. What a sweet antique ryokan run by the loveliest people! We had here the best dinners in our whole trip!!! I cannot explain enough how delicious and exceptional the dinners were. Everyone is sweet and kind, and language doesn't feel like a barrier. We were welcomed with ceremonial tea and sweets. Location is perfect, right at the centre of everything, a 7 minute walk to the old city, 1 minute walk to the bridge with beautiful views, and there are plenty of eateries and cafes around. It was the only stay during our trip where we had shared bathrooms and toilet, but in the end we didn't mind it at all. The authentic experience of the onsen is brilliant, super relaxing. The place feels a bit like a live museum, or your Japanese grandma's house, so it's fun to look around. They also have a library of books to swap / leave. The owners helped us with finding things to do at Takayama. Honestly I couldn't recommend it enough, would definitely return!

The Meitetsu Grand Hotel offers bright rooms with free WiFi, 3 restaurants and a sky lounge café with panoramic city views. The hotel was very convenient. It has a lot of malls/stores at the basement. It is very close to the train station. If you need to go to the airport this is the perfect hotel. Not that expensive also. Good value for the money and the location.

Chaya Hotel se nachází pouhých 40 metrů od zrekonstruovaného poštovního města Magome-Juku z doby Edo a nabízí jednoduché tradiční pokoje s futonovou postelí a podlahou tatami. We had a wonderful stay at Magome Chaya! We booked a private double room and messaged them in advance, asking to include meals in our plan (breakfast and dinner). Both were delicious and served on their restaurant across the street. Communication was great from start to end, and they did inform us several times in advance that it's cash payment only - plan accordingly. The rooms are on the second floor, together with shared bathrooms. On the first floor, you have more bathrooms and also the washroom (female and male), a lounge area, a small guest kitchen, and a laundry room. We slept well, and it was quiet during the night - rooms have heaters, so it wasn't cold. The pillow is indeed, as other reviews mention, a bit hard. I slept without it - perhaps if they changed them for a more 'generic' one, it'd please more people ☺️ The minshuku is located at a beautiful spot in Magome, so I'd most definitely recommend this place! Book and plan in advance, as accommodations get full quickly here. Magome is beautiful, and the Nakasendo Trail is an easy one. I highly recommend it for everyone! Thanks for having us 🙏🏻
