Our objectives for the trip were (1) to learn more about Japan beyond Tokyo's business districts and (2) to do some skiing. Objective #2 was met: we had four very good days of skiing, in various conditions. As for objective #1, Komatsuya helped exceed our expectations: David (the owner) kindly drove us around wherever we needed to go, Izumi-san cooked wonderful Japanese food for breakfast and dinner, and Yukiko-san introduced us to the local attractions and helped us with the schedule and reservations. The room was clean and spacious and the onsen was an outstanding way to wrap up our skiing days.
But beyond all this, we felt like we gained a new family in Japan. We will remember our stay at Komatsuya very fondly because of David and his team and, should we come back to ski in Japan again, I can't imagine staying anyplace else.

The Japanese senior couple managing the pension are genuinely the sweetest people we could have dreamed of. Moomin Papa picked us up at the station at arrival and dropped us off (super early in the morning) after checkout. He drove us and the other guests in the morning to the ski resorts nearby and was also willing to pick us up in the afternoon. He was also great at giving dinner recommendations.
The pension is simple and welcoming, breakfast is great and all we needed for a full day on the slopes. The onsen is a bit old but we didn’t mind. If you have very long hair it could take a while to dry with the available hairdryer - just to keep in mind.
Rooms are nice and warm and the beds are comfortable.
WiFi works well.
Overall I would say it was a beautiful stay, the hosts and their care in everything they did made the experience 100 times better. Highly recommend!

Lovely, spacious ryokan. Very clean, great breakfast. Little bit removed from Myoko Onsen village (10-15 minutes walk) but very close to Myoko Kogen lift area. A pleasure to stay!
