It's rare, especially when you are traveling far from home, to arrive somewhere like a guesthouse and quickly, in the hour, feel a sense of home. Not only the Azumaya guesthouse is very well located, but its small -yet actually perfect- size combined with the little number of guests really creates a cocoon that is rare to find when traveling. I indeed extended my stay as soon as I arrived because I had the feeling I would miss something of the city thanks to the comfort and atmosphere it offered. The managers Nozomi and Shotaro take good care of the place, and mostly of their guests. They will try to accommodate your requests as much as possible. Plus, they do speak English if your Japanese got rusty like mine. They also will recommend you places to visit, places to eat and things to do if you bored, and sometimes even join you with pleasure for a meal or late night drink if their schedule allows it. Azumaya probably offered me one of my favorite stays during my many trips to Japan and I couldn't be more grateful.

Evertlything was very clean. Check-in and check-out process is quick and easy. Staff is very friendly and speaks english quite well, we had no trouble asking something, and we were given a great introduction to hotel's amenities. They have their own detailed map with recommendations for restaurants and tourist spots. Room itself is cosy and quite convenient for two people. They even provided a charger for the phone with two usb outlets. Japanese-style bed (which is a soft matress on the floor) was surprisingly very soft and we had no comfort issues with it. Location is great with quick access both to railway station and Matsumoto Castle.

This is an amazing stay to book, it's in the middle of the mountains and you get a gorgeous view every morning. The host Yoko is very kind and speaks good english! She made an organic breakfast for me every morning, with fresh warm bread, egg, a home made soup and salad! She drove me around too, because I was by public transport. The rooms were large and beautiful, and you have everything you need to rest and relax after the busy cities of Japan. This was my highlight of my trip!

This was our first stop on a month-long trip around Japan, and I cannot put into words just how incredible the whole experience was. A beautiful private home, with a friendly host, in a lovely rural atmosphere. We enjoyed every aspect of the stay, from the traditional decor, to everything we learned about the region. What an amazing way to start our Japan visit - we are sure no other places will measure up.
