🌄 Curio – A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Malcantone
Nestled on the southern slope of Monte Gheggio at about 558–569 meters above sea level, Curio is a picturesque village with around 580 residents. Its historic center stretches along two main streets, preserving the timeless charm of a medieval Swiss-Italian village. Surrounded by forests, vineyards, and panoramic trails, it is an ideal destination for hiking, biking, and peaceful nature walks.
🏛️ History & Architecture
First mentioned in 1196, Curio was once part of a medieval alliance with nearby villages such as Novaggio, Banco, and Bedigliora. The village features beautiful architectural highlights, including the Parish Church of San Pietro, rebuilt in 1609, with a neoclassical façade and richly decorated interiors.
Another notable site is the former School of Drawing, built between 1850–53, now home to the Malcantone Museum, reflecting the village's cultural and educational legacy.
🏺 Malcantone Museum
Opened in 1985 and located in the historic School of Drawing, the Malcantone Museum offers fascinating exhibitions on local history, emigration, artisan traditions, and daily rural life. Open from April to October (Wednesdays and Sundays, 2–5 PM), the museum also organizes guided tours and educational activities.
🌿 Culture, Legends & Local Life
Curio's symbol is the wolf ("Lüv"), found in the village’s coat of arms and inspired by a local legend. According to the tale, a once-feared wolf eventually became a benevolent figure—now celebrated through cultural and theatrical events.
The village also has strong emigration roots. Families like the Avanzini and Visconti left a lasting legacy abroad and helped establish the region’s first drawing school—demonstrating the blend of tradition, education, and global outlook that defines Curio’s identity.
