Nestled in the heart of the countryside yet just a stone’s throw from the coast, Oyster Catcher Barn is a beautifully restored barn that offers the perfect blend of rustic character and modern comfort. Named after the seabirds that frequent the nearby shores, this idyllic retreat is designed for those seeking peace and relaxation. Whether you're looking for a romantic getaway, a family retreat, or a creative hideaway, this barn’s warm, inviting atmosphere makes it the perfect choice.
Staying at Creglea Barns is a walk through our family and World War 2 history. Creglea Farm is where Lyz was born, and grew up. It's a working farm, so don't be surprised to see and hear sheep and cows in various fields on the farm. Whilst farming life is always busy, lambing time (March/April) is our busiest time. We often house those sheep and lambs that require close observation and support in the barn next to Curlew Cottage. If you are staying with us at lambing time, you are welcome to participate in feeding the lambs and sheep in our close observation unit. During World War 2, the farmhouse, where we live onsite, became the Defence Guard Officers' Mess and the barns adapted as the Institute. Both Curlew and Oyster Catcher cottages were part of the RAF Dalby site, used in WW2 as the NAAFI Kitchen and NAAFI Staff Quarters for those working in the receiving blocks (bunkers that are still located on the farm). These formed a passive defence system that used steel-guyed transmitting masts and a pair of timber receiving towers, situated on the land by the sea, to to create maximum dispersal and deception. Now semi-retired, Kev and Lyz work the farm with in partnership with Lyz's brother and nephew, letting Curlew and Oyster Catcher Cottages, working the polytunnel and keeping busy with children and grandchildren.
Nestled along the serene southwestern coast of the Isle of Man, Creglea Barns at Niarbyl offer a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and tranquil living. This picturesque locale is renowned for its stunning sea views, encompassing the Calf of Man and, on clear days, the distant mountains of Ireland. The area is characterised by rolling hills, dramatic coastal paths, and secluded beaches, providing ample opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Residents and visitors can explore scenic trails leading to White Beach, discover ancient Keeils—early Christian chapels such as Lag ny Killey—and enjoy the sight of traditional thatched cottages that add to the region's charm. Niarbyl is also a site of geological significance, featuring the Niarbyl Fault, a remnant of the ancient Iapetus Ocean. This unique geological feature attracts both scientists and tourists interested in the Earth's historical formations. The local community is vibrant and welcoming, with the nearby village of Dalby offering amenities such as St. James Church, which serves as a hub for community events and gatherings. The area is also known for its rich folklore, with tales of fairies and mermaids adding a touch of mystique to the already enchanting landscape. For those seeking a lifestyle that harmoniously blends natural beauty, cultural richness, and a tight-knit community, Creglea Barns at Niarbyl presents an idyllic choice.
