Harry's Hut is a 10 minute walk from the South West Coastal Path on the rugged North Devon coast, close to the Cornish border. It's a cosy, airy space - complete with wood-burning stove, pizza oven and fully-equipped kitchen - with great views over National Trust land. The Hut is perfect for those wanting to escape the big smoke, to chill in front of the fire, bird watch, walk, swim at secluded beaches or travel country lanes to enjoy this wilder patch of the English countryside and coastline. Harry's Hut is a posh 'shack'. Inspired by 'Cabin Porn' and Scandinavian summer houses, it's one big space with a mezzanine bedroom and separate shower bathroom. Its fully equipped for cooking (inside or out), lounging in front of the fire, bird watching and enjoying this special part of the country. There is a cupboard in which a few personal effects are locked up but, apart from that, it's all yours. If you arrive at night you will need a torch unless it's full moon! It is a remote rural environment so no street lights. There is also a torch in the hall for your use whilst staying at Harry's Hut.
We live between London and North Devon. We both work in Film & TV production but originally studied and worked as artists. We love to travel and have family and friends in Australia, Oregon and the Netherlands. Our daughter lives and works in London. We increasingly enjoy the outdoors - walking, gardening, swimming, etc - as well as seeing Art, Theatre, Cinema and visiting museums and historic buildings. We also love food and good company. We split our time between living in our other property - about 6 miles away from Harry's Hut - and London so we are not based in Southole. However we can always be contacted through Airbnb and via our mobiles from 48 hours before your booking. We aim to assist you in whatever way we can whilst also being happy to leave you to enjoy the privacy, peace and tranquility of Harry's Hut.
Harry’s Hut is situated in a totally unspoilt stretch of English coastline. From Clovelly to the north and Bude to the south there is no coastal development apart from an old pub at Hartland Quay and with a little effort one can access many secluded beaches and hidden valleys linked by a spectacular section of the South West Coastal Path. Southole is a hamlet of ten dwellings where everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. From the garden you can just hear the bells of Welcombe church ring, the occasional cyclist, horse-rider, walker or car. The dominant sound is birdsong. The surrounding narrow Devon lanes wind through unspoilt villages, farms and towns so please drive carefully whilst exploring. Both Exmoor and Dartmoor are an hour's drive away It's a great place to walk once you are here but very difficult to access without a car. You can get to Bude, Barnstable, Exeter, or Tiverton Parkway by public transport but beyond that you will have to resort to a taxi or a hire car. Exeter is your best bet if you want to hire a car. It's a four hour drive from West London. Please note that the local Devon lanes are windy and narrow so do drive with caution - thank you. GARDEN Harry's Hut is not a traditional garden: we have designed it to be full of native wildflowers including orchids that encourage wildlife into the garden. There is a woodland slope, hedge, a flowering lawn, meadow and a new area beyond the meadow where we are reviving an old pond and stream. If you are bringing a dog please respect the garden and remove any dog poo. Thank you. THE CLIFF and SOUTH WEST COASTAL PATH …the quickest way up to the cliff path is left up the lane till you get to a gate at South Hole Farm at the top of the hamlet. Go through the gate and follow the track up to the South West Coastal Path. If you turn left on the path you will reach Welcombe Mouth in about 20 minutes passing Embury Beacon, the remains of an Iron Age Hill Fort, on the way.
