Apedroc Studio is a beautifully renovated former recording studio where parts of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon were recorded. It is set in the glorious grounds of an ancient house, recorded in the Domesday Book as having been owned by Queen Edith (wife of King Edward the Confessor and sister of King Harold). From the 1930s the main house was owned by Sir Michael Balcon, founder of Ealing Studios and one of the forefathers of the British film industry. Balcon's grandson, Daniel Day-Lewis spent many childhood summers at the property. Currently Apedroc is a working stud farm breeding thoroughbred racehorses for the flat. It is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the edge of the Ashdown Forest, in the same village where AA Milne wrote the Winnie the Pooh stories, which are so inexorably linked to the Ashdown Forest. It is only 10 miles away from historic Royal Tunbridge Wells, a beautiful Regency spa town and magnate for tourists, including the world famous Pantiles, with its cafes, restaurants and boutique shops.
Clare and Neil have lived at Apedroc for the last 12 years with a large collection of quirky animals. They run the stud business with the help of two full time employees and a part time housekeeper. Previously they both worked in financial services; Clare still keeps her hand in as a non-executive director of a number of financial services businesses. They have a deep love for the countryside and the area, for all things horse. Keen walkers and occasional cricket players, they are available to offer local advice and hens eggs, if required, including about the Ashdown Forest, but will leave you in peace if you seek rural isolation or regional entertainment. They have written a comprehensive guide to the area available to guests of the Studio.
Hartfield is the quintessential English village, and lies in rural Sussex, in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it is ideally located for exploring the picturesque villages of East Sussex and Kent. It's a great base for walkers and cyclists and has numerous iconic stately homes nearby, including Hever Castle, Penshurst Place, Chartwell, Sheffield Park and Scotney Castle. The South Downs and South Coast are within easy reach with the quaint historic towns of Alfriston, Hastings and Rye readily accessible. There are three ancient character-filled pubs within walking distance. Central London is an hour away by train and the colourful and varied seaside resort of Brighton with its famous Lanes is only 27 miles away.
