Kefalas is a small village in the Apokoronas region, 30 kilometers east of the city of Chania. The area was colonized in the 11th century by the Byzantines and was named so because it was inhabited by the rulers, the "kefalia" (meaning heads).
Kefalas is built on the slopes of the Drapanos peninsula and offers a magnificent view of the bay of Georgioupolis, the White mountains and, depending on the clarity of the atmosphere, even as far as Rethymno. Some of the houses are new, others have been beautifully renovated. In the center there is a small square and a cafeteria. There are also taverns and a supermarket.
Kefalas is also known as the village of churches. There are at least 8 churches accessible to the public and many more in private courtyards. The abundance of churches is due to a rule that was in force during the Ottoman era - land would not be confiscated if there was a church on it.
The nearest beach is Ombrosgialos, which is a rocky cove with a pier. Locals come here to sunbathe on the pier and swim in the crystal blue sea.
