My name is Mohammed Laoulaou, proud owner and operator of Rcif Hostel. I was born and raised in the beautiful city of Fes, and after traveling to many countries, I’ve come to appreciate just how unique and special this place truly is.
I’ve spent my entire life surrounded by the rich lifestyle, vibrant culture, delicious food, and warm weather of Fes—but what I love most are the incredible arts, handcrafts, and intricate architectural details that fill the city, especially in the old medina.
I come from a humble background. My mother worked as a professional cook in various Riads, and my father was a talented carpenter who specialized in designing traditional cedar wood ceilings known locally as "Qobba." Growing up in such an environment, I was always fascinated by the craftsmanship, colors, and textures that define the homes of Fes.
Following in my parents' footsteps, I’ve spent over 20 years working in Riads, hotels, and the tourism industry—something I am deeply passionate about. Rcif Hostel is more than just a place to stay; it’s a reflection of my heritage, my family’s legacy, and my love for this incredible city.
I look forward to welcoming you and sharing the true spirit of Fes with you.

Welcome to Rcif Hostel – Your Home in the Heart of Fez
Rcif Hostel is a recently renovated property ideally located in the heart of Fez’s ancient medina. Nestled between the northern and southern watchtowers—remnants of the Merinid dynasty—our hostel offers a unique window into Morocco’s rich history and culture. These historic towers once served as protective lookouts for the families of Fez, guarding against intruders and strangers.
The medina itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site, surrounded by fortified walls and accessed through 14 historical gates, each leading to a different part of the old city. Rcif Hostel lies in the Rcif neighborhood, just a few meters from a nearby parking area—making it both convenient and well-connected.
Dating back to before the 11th century, the building has been carefully restored to offer a cozy and authentic Moroccan experience. The architecture blends traditional charm with modern amenities to ensure your comfort while immersing you in a local lifestyle. Our interiors feature stunning mosaic tiles and handcrafted artwork that reflect the spirit of Fez.
Whether you’re looking to swap travel stories, relax in a welcoming environment, or explore the vibrant streets of the medina, Rcif Hostel is the perfect place to feel at home. We offer budget-friendly rates, a great atmosphere, and a peaceful night's sleep—right in the center of the action, yet just far enough for quiet evenings.
Just a short 1–7 minute walk takes you to the main street of the medina, where you’ll find affordable restaurants, snack shops, and local stores in Rcif Square.
We also organize guided walking tours of the Fez medina, day trips to Chefchaouen, Meknes, and Volubilis, as well as unforgettable adventures to the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert.
Come experience Fez with us—your journey starts here.
Warmly hosted by Mohammed Laoulaou, your local guide and friend.

R’cif: A Gateway to the Medina
R’cif is one of the few areas within the Medina of Fez developed in the 20th century. Spacious and vibrant, it serves as a hub of exchange and craftsmanship for the district. It’s a great starting point to explore traditional neighborhoods and local artisans—like the dyers of Place Sebbaghine, just past the Terrafine Bridge.
Overlooking the square is the R’cif Mosque, its elegant minaret built by order of Sultan Moulay Slimane in the 18th century. A covered gallery runs along the square, hosting shops and a lively souk offering fresh produce, fish, meat, pastilla sheets made on large metal domes, and Fez’s famous dried meat, khlii. The square has been recently redeveloped to better reflect its architectural and cultural value. Nearby, a small public garden offers a peaceful gathering space.
