• Wineries are a feature of the Wairarapa, especially Martinborough. Moy Hall is recommended, as is The Runholder. North Wairarapa has a little gem called Le Gra with a great tasting paddle over a grazing platter, great value!
• A gin tasting at Runholder or Reid & Reid is always fun.
• A little closer to Masterton and well-recommended is a newly completed architecturally stunning Cellar Door and café called URLAR, Gladstone. Enjoy a tasting flight or just a glass and tasty little morsels.
• The Farmer's Market is on a Saturday morning in Masterton.
• Lake Henley and Queen Elizabeth Park are just across the river from us and are great places for a walk with dogs or kids.
• Visit Wairarapa's version of Stonehenge and hear the fascinating stories behind the original and its purpose. Occasional night concerts there are a must-do!
• Visit the tuatara and kiwis at the Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre, 30 minutes away.
• Mt Holdsworth Rocky Lookout track, Riversdale Beach and Castlepoint (includes a walk to the lighthouse!) are also a 30-40 minute drive away.
• Further South is Ngawi with its iconic bulldozers launching the fishing boats, the seal colony and you can race up the steps to the lighthouse for a view of the South Island on a clear day!
• Greytown also has some lovely little cafes, antique shops and ladies clothing stores. A great place to buy craft gin, books and it pays to have a look at Schoc Chocolate after you've meandered around Cobblestones Museum.
• You can even book a few loop-de-loops in a Tiger Moth flight from the local airfield!
