The Murrell family has been part of Manapouri since 1889, among the first settlers to explore and establish themselves in this stunning corner of Aotearoa New Zealand. Today, their legacy continues with this peaceful, welcoming accommodation full of character and built by Jack Murrell, grandson of pioneering explorer Robert Murrell (known locally as Young Bob, who famously discovered the Wilmot Pass) and set against the breathtaking backdrop of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Fiordland National Park.
The house has 2 comfortable bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, including an ensuite, making it ideal for couples, families, or friends. The fully equipped kitchen and open-plan living and dining area make it easy to self-cater and relax while enjoying uninterrupted views of Fiordland’s mountains and pristine wilderness.
Just 5 minutes from the departure point for Doubtful Sound cruises, 20 minutes from Te Anau and a scenic 2-hour drive to Milford Sound, the location is perfect for exploring the region. Manapouri amenities are close by.
The owners live nearby at the historic Murrells Grand View House, offering local knowledge if needed.
We are Robert and Philippa Murrell and we are the 5th generation of Murrells to live at Grand View House, located next door to Murrell's Manapouri Lookout. Grand View House has been providing hosted bed and breakfast accommodation in Manapouri since 1889 and we are now delighted to now have Murrell's Manapouri Lookout for guests who want a self-contained, peaceful and relaxing place to stay. The house has everything you need for your Fiordland holiday and we are located just next door should you require any information or advice about the area. Please get in touch prior to arrival if you would like us to make any activity bookings for you. We’re local and have plenty of knowledge of all there is to do in Fiordland.
We love meeting people from all around New Zealand and the World and we hope you enjoy our little slice of paradise.
Manapouri is a small township with approximately 300 permanent residents. Guests find our location extremely useful as we are only a 6-minute walk from the departure point for Doubtful Sound tours and Te Anau is only a 20-minute drive. It is an ideal location for a peaceful and relaxing break and perfect for exploring all that Fiordland has to offer. Guests can walk from the house to Lake Manapouri and the beach. A short drive provides access to one of NZ’s Great Walks – the Kepler Track - and other walks are available in the area. Manapouri has a petrol station/mechanic, small shop/café, bookshop, antique/second-hand shop and a bar/café and is the departure point for all Doubtful Sound cruises.
